1971 Cheyenne K10 Build Thread-Project Idaho

kay guys so I'm going to start my build thread here. it might not be full frame off for a couple of years but Id like to have everything I do in one spot for ease of looking back on it. Lets start with some buffing and emblem restoration ive been doing the last few days. Not quite sure how to add a thought for each picture. Maybe someone could clue me in but I think its pretty obvious before and after on emblems. and the paint speaks for itself. Still going to need a little work on the 8-350 emblem. Might just redo it altogether.

Your emblems turned out well! More details on your truck? I really like the Bronze/White combo!

Re: 1971 Cheyenne K10 Build Thread-Project Idaho

Thanks guys. The truck was bought here locally. I believe I'm the 4th owner and it has spent its whole life in Idaho. There are rust issues in the usual places (cab corners, cab supports, frame) but nothing that cant be fixed with time and effort. It has a 283 transplanted from a 65 pickup and original th350 trans. NP205. 3.07s. Wood bed. The spid is fairly plain jane, but it does have roof marker lights!

Next on the list is a 350ci and trans rebuild, New cooling system, fuel system and brakes.

It's all melted. Typical spring weather in the idaho mtn though. 4 seasons in the same day. Boise area is usually nice this time of year.In the 60s yet? Your truck is gorgeous. Nice stance.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne K10 Build Thread-Project Idaho

Redbaron- It will make it to Twin soon .

Geunther- I found tips and tricks from the site. I wish I could because I think the individual deserves most of the credit but if you search emblem restoration laquer and syringe you should find it. This method works well. I will give you a tip though not mentioned. DO NOT GET IN A HURRY to 'help' it dry.Let it dry in a cool shaded indoors for about 24 hours until you try to handle it. I put one side in the sun and it bubbled. Not fun and really no way to fix it except start over. Live and learn right.

deadhead- Thanks. Brown eyed women and red grenadine, the bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean

Re: 1971 Cheyenne K10 Build Thread-Project Idaho

Getting ready to put a new engine in this truck. Per captain fab and a couple other recommendations ive settled on the L31 vortec crate engine. I will need a little help with this as this is my first engine swap. Ive got a parts list going and need some help. My questions as of now are surrounding the drive accessories. Is there a kit to buy or do i salvage from a similar era truck i.e. 96-2000 Silverado or sierra(same era as engine)? This will be a non a/c truck. will my alternator transfer? will my power steering pump transfer? Also what water pump do i need for this? the engine will be here next week along with intake, intake gaskets, fuel pump, flexplate and fuel pump relay kit. Ill also be ordering a 600 cfm summit brand carb as i had the 500 and like it. Theres more questions to come but this is a good place to start.

Talking Re: 1971 Cheyenne K10 Build Thread-Project Idaho

Got the L31 vortec crate a few days ago. Now starts the fun of dressing it and figuring out all of the little parts and pieces I need to finish it and get it in the truck. I went to the junkyard and picked up some brackets off of a 98 Silverado. Media blasted them and painted them with an aluminum chrome color paint. Turned out okay. Wanted it to match the intake but oh well, close enough.

Tried to rotate the pictures in a photo editor and repost them but still turned out sideways. You get the point.

Hey thanks for fixing that for me! Yes L31R from jegs. On sale for 1899.00. I'm getting excited to get this thing running but there's still a few things to do yet. Let's hope the 47 year old th350 holds up!

Krylon dull aluminum color is a very close match to cast aluminum....Walmart should stock it.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne K10 Build Thread-Project Idaho

Thanks guys. Off to Walmart to look for dull aluminum . Also I'm getting another parts order together. Need info for the melonized steel gear for the distributor. Bought an ebay distributor last year to put in the 283 and have since lost the receipt and packaging. Its the typical red capped skip white style dist.(may have been a skip white). Anyhow, I'm noticing it says hardened gear for hydraulic cams but also reading conflicting things like "ductile iron" material gear. Don't want to ruin my brand new motor so what do I need?

The melonized gears I'm looking at are damn near 80 bucks! a lot cheaper than a new cam if I were to ruin it. Anyone have some knowledge on this subject? Maybe ill put a call in to scoggin dickey or my local GM service counter as well.
