New to Forum with a question

1970 4x4. 71-72 Grill. Bought it that way but I'm thinking about purchasing the 70 grill again for it!

I've been using it almost as a daily driver for a few weeks now.

I do have a question to start off with:

Under partial acceleration, maybe 5-10% throttle, the truck seems to have a hesitation after a little time under acceleration. (It doesn't start that way but rather, accelerates, then power falls off. Sputters and loses power. Anything over a light amount of throttle, the issue doesn't exist.

I'm not very good at diagnosing these things yet, so i figured I'd introduce myself and ask a question!

The truck has the original motor I believe. It's a three speed on the column.

I haven't learned a whole lot about the truck and the ins and outs yet, but I'm sure that will come with time.

PS the pup is Molly.

Thanks in advance!

Re: New to Forum with a question

Is the carburetor a Rochester Quadrajet? They are notorious for having a "bog" spot if they're out of adjustment.

Re: New to Forum with a question

Welcome!!
Get Molly to help pop the hood and take some pics!
And post some more info.
What motor, carb, intake?
If you don't know, some pics will help.

Re: New to Forum with a question

I believe it's a 350 but I haven't actually scraped the grime off the code yet to know for sure. Here's a generic shot I took a few weeks ago.

I know this isn't a close-up, but it's what I have on this PC right now. I'll try and get some better shots tonight.

Thanks!

Re: New to Forum with a question

Molly's a beauty! And welcome to the forum! Thats a sweet lookin 70 K-10? If and when you decide to go with the correct grille, the 69 & 70 grilles had openings for the turn lights and smooth bumpers with no openings. Thats a 71-72 bumper and grille on your truck. The partial throttle hesitation or dead spot is likely a dirty carb and/or a timing issue. Need more info such as what motor? What mods have been made such as does it still have a points distributor, magnetic breakerless, or HEI ignition? Whats the initial timing set at? Whats the curb idle speed? Last two questions should be checked once the motor's warmed up and the fast idle kicked off after she's warmed up...Cant tell which is prettier, Molly or the truck!

Re: New to Forum with a question

I'll get some close-ups tonight hopefully. That will answer some things I hope!

Yes it is a K10. I'm assuming that it being 4x4 from factory makes it a K10 Correct? The badging says "Custom/10"

Here are a few others I took that first week.

Re: New to Forum with a question

Beautiful truck there. Regarding your bog down, as mentioned earlier, when a Rochester is not tuned correctly, it can give you the problem you mentioned, but before you start adjusting things, take a look at the little filter that is in the fuel inlet to the carburetor. When that thing gets clogged, the engine will run ok (but lean) at light throttle, and die off under harder throttle due to fuel starvation. There might also be a problem with the fuel tank pickup screen being dirty/plugged, but start simple and go from there.

Re: New to Forum with a question

Here are some pictures of the throttle body and ignition. Hopefully, this is enough to answer your questions. Let me know if you need anything else to help and I appreciate it!

I'm going to ask a stupid question because I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I will ask anyway: Is there any way to know by the pictures whether or not if this is a 350?

Re: New to Forum with a question

Most if not all 350's had a 4bbl quadrajet.
Yours is a 2bbl rochestor 2GC.
Could of had the 2bbl intake and carb swapped on.
You need to find the numbers on the motor to confirm it's size, year etc.
You might have a 307.
Look here for where to look for numbers and what they mean.

Re: New to Forum with a question

At the risk of asking a stupid question --

How in the world are you all seeing the ID's while the motor is still in the truck?

I've used a telescopic mirror with a light but my problem is I can't even get the mirror in the right area to know where to even scrub the grime. I've had about 50% of my body leaning over the side trying to look in the driver side area below the distributor cap and can't find the area all the pictures talk about. So I'm not even sure I even have the right area

Is it possible to see the ID while the motor is still in the truck? I'm assuming yes, but how? Does anyone have a picture of the area while the motor is still in the truck?

Re: New to Forum with a question

the numbers you are looking for is behind the head where the bell housing bolts on....and they are in the cast of the block....another words for that they were in the casting when they poured the block....my 70 model has a 350 with a 2 barrel carb as well but it may have been put in as someone else said....i just changed it out for an aftermarket intake and carb....good luck..

Re: New to Forum with a question

Are you shining the light in the mirror or just using the light to light up the area?
Hold the mirror (a big one) right behind the head at a 45 degree angle and shine the light directly into the mirror.
You can't miss it.

Re: New to Forum with a question

Good looking truck!
Its not just a later grill, the bumper's been swapped and holes filled in the hood where the emblem would go.
I'd yank the carb and put a rebuild kit on it after blasting it with some B12.

Re: New to Forum with a question

If you look on the radiator side of the engine, passenger side, in front of the head, there is a little half inch wide flat pad. If you clean it, you should see some numbers that end with a 2 or 3 letter code. That code will decipher what engine it is

If you put the 69/70 grille on then you won't have a bow tie on the front anywhere and you will need to swap bumpers! Sweet truck though! Good luck

Re: New to Forum with a question

Thanks for the input all! I did not think all the way through on the grill so I appreciate the heads up. I still might eventually do it -- I just like the look of that 70 grill a bunch more.

Wish I would have seen this sooner! It would be good to meet some that know these trucks because I know pretty close to nothing.

Again, thank you all and I will update as it comes along.

For now, I am going to look at a rebuild kit or maybe a 4bbl and intake.

Re: New to Forum with a question

Before you go put an intake on and new 4 bbl carb, did you find out if it is a 350 or not? I would suggest that first before you put money into the engine, for two reasons. The 307 is not a real big motor and can easily be over carbed, the other reason is if you plan to rebuild the motor soon or install a new 350 then I would wait for that time to do this. If no plans to rebuild and it is a 350, have at it. Caution on the 69 - 70 grill, the two main parts to the grill are expensive! 500.00 for the two, so just letting you know they are expensive.
Welcome, great bunch of people here willing to help you.

I have not but I would wait on a purchase before determining if it was indeed a 350.

You mention waiting if I am going to replace the 350. At some point, I do want a nice healthy crate in the truck but it sounds like you advise against putting an intake and carb that has been used on the new motor. Is that just to keep everything as new as possible or is that a "bad practice" to do?

I keep telling myself, I'm fine to buy stuff now and can just transfer it to the new motor when I do get one. I'm not rushing to get the new motor though ... This one burns oil but it does feel decent. Am I telling myself wrong?

Yep, it'd be on the inside of your glove box door.
