I have some issues here!!!
I put the engine and tranny on the frame tonight. The balancer will clear the Rack and pinion with no issues. The motor mounts may be in wrong as the shaft for the steering will never work the way it is. Also I would like to know if the tranny on anyones truck is below the frame rails?? 73-87. I have the tranny member that i got from bill turner. I took a straight edge and ran it across the bottom of the frame rails and the tranny pan barely hits it by maybe a 1/4". I will shim till it clears the frame. I have attached a few pics. Nothing is mounted yet. Anyone one have any input?? I bought polyuerathane mounts also. Damn things where $100 for the engine and 1 tranny. Do you think I need to run the tall mount instead of short to clear the rack shaft?

I had to make my own motor mounts with the setup I have, what I might suggest, use the stock truck motor mounts, use 3/16 x 2.5in flat steal, a little diagram, but you might think of something else. This can be heated and easily bent or cut into peices and welded together or bolted into place for later removal or ?. it will also be quite heavy enough to take a pretty modified engine.
Nice setup, looks clean.. ![]() |

Phantom - I just order these motor mounts / stands for my motor. I hope they clear my rack. A stock mount might work if you cut them down. My shaft on my rack is shorter then yours. I think mine stick out less then 2inch out of my rack. I will check and see.

Hey thanks for the pic. The pan hangs maybe a 1/4" below the frame rails which isnt bad. I want it to be atleast even with the frame as I dont want to scrape it. My main prob is the shaft from the R&P that is way to close to the motor mount. I wonder if anyone can shorten and respline it or maybe shorten and put a groove in it for another type of joint?

I think I may have found a solution. Check out this link at the bottom of the page in the Rack and pinion section for mustang II. They now have a 1 1/2 inch input shaft. What do you guys think?? http://www.flamingriver.com/racks1.htm

Phantom- I got a power rack. The shorter shaft could work. What if you notched out a little bit of the motor mount/stand to gain some clearance too.

Most of my problem is where the bolt goes thru the mount and there is no room for cutting there. I can however take about a 1/4" from the botom part of the mount where it comes to a v in pic #2. That may work. Im calling flaming river today to see if I can get a shaft and have a shop switch the two.

I thought I had room in my 67 where my column came out of the firewall to get by my upper Control Arm, but when I added the ujoint it added another inch to the length of the shaft which really screwed things up, now I'm having to replace my steering column with a 4"shorter one. the short shaft Rack might take care of your problem but you will probally need to get one of the double ujoints to come back up and around your motor mount..

I sent the rack back to Flaming River today. They are going to change the input shaft to the shorter 1 1/2" one and send back to me. $100.00

I wouldnt think a shorter shaft would make much of a diffrence because the angle is still directed at the motor mount. I would tend to think if you use the stock towers the shaft would go in between the tower and crossmember.
You may have to mock up the steering column and work around it. The steering is way more critical then the postion or type of motor mount you use. Good luck the project is looking killerrrrrrr !!!!! |

Hi,
I was loooking at your photos and would like to say that if you rasie the tranny at the mount, you will be changing the pinion angle and throw the driveline out of whack. (you may have already noted that) Also, as I recall on the 73-87 tranny x-member, the trans mount sits 1.5" above the base of the frame. That would still put the pan slightly lower than the frame bottom. If you raise the rear, you will need to raise the motor also to maintain a 3 degree slope for the driveline. Of course, you could always alter the rear end to compensate for the difference in angle. The intake manifold opening needs to be as close to level as possible (ideally) at ride height, though you may already know this as well. I'm just giving you things to think about, different point of view and all. On the motor mount situation, you will most likely need to go ahead and get the multiple u-joint configuration for the steering shaft. Use 2 shafts, 3 ujoints and a center support bearing on the frame to clear the motor mounts. You may have already thought of this as well... Good luck and keep those pics comin' ! ![]()

thanks for the tips!! I didnt think about the slope ut it makes great since as well. As long as I have the right angle at the front and rear of the driveline that would be ok??
