Question split rims

Can someone tell me how to identify split rims ?

They have a removable ring outside. It is actually the tire bead. You beat the bead of the tire down, remove the giant snap ring and the whole bead comes off.
BTW they are rare and valuable. I also happen to have a set of six that I will sell you for a mere $1000.

Welcome to the board from southern oregon... Split rim's are a death trap and the way to tell if you have them is the rim edge where the bead of the tire goes will have a spilt or opening that look's like the rim is broke. Someone may have a pic they could post for ya to show you in better detail..

I have never heard anything about being valuable...they are illeagal to use on the road in some states.

A lot of tire shops will not change them anymore. As for value, I know where there's a gold mine if they're valuable. lol scott

Take all 6 of them to the scrap pile, that is the only thing those things are good for. They should be against the law period!

I agree with Frenchblue 72, they are very dangerous. They are illegal in Michigan. The retaining part of the split rings can rust to the point that they will blow off if disturbed, (as in just removing the wheel from the truck). There was a tire repairman killed not too long ago from one of these wheels.

If anyone has them I would suggest not using them

Note, the wheel can be without the holes and look like a normal steel wheel...the outer ring being removed is the offender in this style wheel.
If not done properly, that ring can (and has) pop off and kill you. We lost a guy in a neighboring unit when I was in the army. He was airing up a duce-and-a-half (2 1/2 ton cargo truck) wheel after installing a new tire.
