Project "Ferdinand" the Longhorn

Figured I'd start a build thread, even though I don't have any big projects in mind for this one. Mostly a clean up and drive deal (hopefully).

A week ago I drove down to Jackson, TN to take a look at a 71 Cheyenne Super Longhorn to replace the 72 K10 SWB Super that I'm selling to a gentleman who was in search of one to do a full factory restoration. The truck turned out to be very solid, so I went ahead and paid for the truck and brought home the title. The truck appears to have originally been medium olive, and a new SPID was printed when some previous owner presumably did a restoration on it. It's pretty crusty right now, but a pretty nice restoration appears to have been done at some point in its life when it was converted to black. I haven't checked the numbers, but the drivetrain appears to at least be period correct. Runs and drives great, and really just needs some spit and polish work. Gonna clean it up, probably replace the carpet and upholstery, replace the bed wood, and just enjoy it for a while as I fix the little stuff.

Got it home last night after a quick 7 hour road trip after work. Had a little snafu with the trailer. The Uhaul guy insisted upon attaching the trailer to our hitch and didn't tighten the retainer screw to keep the hitch on the ball. Found that out as I started pulling the truck on the trailer. It rode 3 hours down to Jackson, TN with nothing keeping it on the ball!

As it sat last weekend when I drove down to look it over:

Re: Project "Ferdinand" the Longhorn

Got up bright and early today to a BEAUTIFUL Kentucky morning. 60 degrees at 7am on the way to a low 80s high. Perfect day to dig in and start cleaning up the new truck! Also snapped a couple pictures of the new truck parked behind its younger brother before digging into the clean up. The K10 is supposed to be heading to it's new home tomorrow. Gonna be rough seeing that one go, but it'll mean braces for my daughter and a new deck and landscaping for the family BBQs this summer!

Re: Project "Ferdinand" the Longhorn

Fixed a couple pieces of trim, replaced a blown fuse to the heater fan, new bulb in the cab light, and everything appears to be working well. Washed the hood, then polished one side with Meguire's Car Show Glaze. Paint is cleaning up nicely!

Re: Project "Ferdinand" the Longhorn

After the success of cleaning up the hood, I decided to finish the truck this afternoon. I washed it all down and used the Car Show Glaze to polish up the rest of the truck. Then I went back with a Meguire's NXT liquid wax and gave it a good coat. It has a few warts here and there, but right now I'm OK with that! It turned out pretty good I think!

Re: Project "Ferdinand" the Longhorn

Couple pics of the engine bay and interior. The drivetrain appears to be mostly original, with the exception of an HEI conversion and headers.

Re: Project "Ferdinand" the Longhorn

I've done a handful of things since I updated last time. I'll have to get some pictures of the engine bay posted too, but yesterday I threw some new woodgrain tape on the lower mouldings. Thought I'd do a before and after. Made a HUGE difference I think.

Re: Project "Ferdinand" the Longhorn

Nothing much to show, but I snapped a few more pictures over the weekend when we drove down to White House, TN for the Southeastern Truck Nationals show. It was a great time for anybody in the area. Highly recommended!
