700R4 ??'s

Here & other forums (ops did I say that) LOL. I have read about installing a switch to lock up the trq. conv. Here is what I don't understand what is the purpose of locking it in/up? In stock situation doesn't it lock up in 4th gear by default? Whats the advantage of it? **My trans by its #'s is a 1992 yr.** This pic shows a Red circle in a spot that looks like some kind of electronic hookup of some sort. Is that when in its stock original fitment has something to do with the locking of the trq. conv. through the cars system? I know its a lot of ????'s. Any help is appreciated.

That's not a red circle, it's a wire looped and zip tied

Since it is Not in its Original Vehicle and doesn't have any wires coming from the trans and going to the trucks system, with that being said it does go into 4th gear and holds there. Does those wires you know my description "Red wires" have to be hooked up some where & where?

Re: 700R4 ??'s

There is always more parasitic loss in an auto transmission compared to a manual transmission. This is because a manual transmission is mechanically engaging the different gears and auto transmissions hydraulically engage the different gears. There is also loss in the torque converter, compared to the clutch of a manual transmission. The oem's looked for ways to increase fuel mileage, and one of the ways was to decrease slippage in the transmission by locking the torque converter together.

Yes, to take full advantage of the 700r4 you should have a way to lock and just as importantly unlock the torque convertor. There are several companies that sell kits to ad this function to your vehicle. Here is a link for a kit built by TCI and sold via Summit Racing.

I hope this helps.

Now this is going in the right directions for answers. Is the "Red circle" my description how it is hooking up to the original car/truck. What and where do those wires go to or what is on the other end of those wires a switch or what?

thanks wbc409

Correct that is where the original wiring plugged into the transmission. I think it was a 4 wire plug.

Some units locked up automatically in 4th gear but not all. I'm sure an experienced transmission guy can set it up that way if you like.

Re: 700R4 ??'s

advantages , lowers rpms at speed ,lowers temperature , increases fuel mileage ,

there are other peramiters besides just being in fourth gear , to make it lock ,

they work fine without lockup , and many are built specificaly for that , some converters dont have the clutch

Re: 700R4 ??'s

The main job of the lockup function is to keep the fluid from overheating while in OD. In OD, the load in the converter is increased and this energy is converted into heat. As mentioned, locking the turbine to the impeller also increases fuel economy because the energy is no longer converted to heat in the converter.

No, it doesn't lockup automatically. In a Gm transmission it is electric/hydraulically controlled.

So Bigdav160; the kit (TCI) that "C10_ustacould" posted from Summit I understand works somewhat like the way it would have in its Original car/truck. I have read & seen that you can manually use a switch also to lock or unlock it, picture inserted. Which of the two ways would do the job better or easier

Re: 700R4 ??'s

I believe one wire is +12v and the other ground. The ground is interrupted by the brake light switch and a vacuum switch. You don't want the TC locked up during emergency stops or acceleration (low vacuum). The above diagram also incorporates a manual override switch.

Re: 700R4 ??'s

Yes it fits fine.
The wiring is dependent on the internal wiring (it changed depending on model year and model) and there are different ways to control the TCC externally.

And maybe you should just call PATC, which is where you lifted the original picture from, and ask them your question. They even have a product for this very situation.

It is a discussion thread. A question was asked and answered. The person asking the question has 4 posts, and maybe did not know to do so. Reporting this for rudeness, yet replying rudely is silly. Please realize not everyone is forum savvy and we have members from tween to elderly who could use a hand and not a foot.

I was just meaning that his question about a 97 what ever it was didn't have anything to do with my 92 trans. question. I felt he was stepping on my thread asking a question that had nothing to do with the original post about a 92 700R4. Next time I'll just ask him/her to re read the usage rules.
