Re: 1978 Russet Metallic 4x4

I'm still waiting on the wheels, but I accomplished some things today:
  • Installed Correct Color Temp HID Bulb on the Driver's Side
  • Installed GM Compass Accessory and Convex Mirror Overlay (Dad Likes Them)
  • Got the Truck Inspected and Registered
  • Checked Fluids and All Functions (Gas Gauge Indicator is Weirdly Offset)

Re: 1978 Russet Metallic 4x4

I tightened up the fog lamps. Had the steering aligned. Still have a mystery clunk under the driver's feet. Got the new Ramsey stickers, but I'll wait to install. I have the Daystar Isolator for the winch cable coming with a new winch controller. Still need to cut the custom mud mats. I'm keeping the steps covered until the unveiling with Dad. Here are some updated pictures (good light):

Just Awesome

Beautiful. Did it come with intermittent wipers or did you retrofit them?

I find the custom bumper to be remarkably built and aesthetic in an honest 70s way. That sucker is stout. It has Hickey style hooks welded to the bottom. One is bent from serious yanking.

Re: 1978 Russet Metallic 4x4

Having the driveshafts rebalanced just to make sure they're true. Getting touchup powdercoat where my guy was "Test Fitting" the side steps. Still waiting on wheels. A few items I'm trying to figure out without much luck:

1. There's a clunk under the driver's feet when I do most anything driving that makes the setup flex. I can't see anything binding or contacting. I'm wondering if there's some kind of body buckle thing going on. Any ideas? Experience?

2. There's a lot of rattle coming from the rear tailgate. What do I need to look for when I open that up?

The clunk under your feet makes me think of the shackle bushing in the frame, has it been replaced?

Did you have new driveshafts made? I'm wondering if one of them is bottoming out.

Might be worth checking. Thanks. Just had them pulled and rebalanced. About to reinstall. I'll see if there's enough slip.

The factory rally wheels punched out to 16s that Stockton Wheel produces. I'll run the plastic caps until I hunt down a nice set of NOS.

This was missing on the other tailgate rod. That's the tailgate rattle.

Re: 1978 Russet Metallic 4x4

Has anybody else experienced a clunk at the driver's feet that they figured out. Again, I can't find any suspension contact or such. Seems to show up with any flex (turn, bump, etc). The driveshaft isn't it. It's not a little clunk. It's solid.

Re: 1978 Russet Metallic 4x4

I assume that the cab supports are good and rust free? On my cab I had a metallic noice when flexing. It was the front cab support that was loose from the floor board, spot welds had kind of rusted away. So the cab floor was separating and hitting the support when rough terrain or flexing was there. New supports and spot welds fixed that. But I doubt that is what it is with yours....

Can you duplicate the sound lifting the RF tire with a floor jack? It might be easier to tell where it's coming from that way.

Opinion: What do y'all think about going with the 77 yellow stripe in the aluminum trim instead of the black? Seems like that might tie the interior to the exterior even better?

I'm out of town for a few days, so won't be doing much. Just need to play with it, I guess. What would that show?
