Can anyone help me determine my ride height?

The previous owner installed drop springs, but he's dead now so I don;t know how much drop he put in. Truck has drum brakes all around, so no drop spindles.

I am thinking of going with 4 inch drop springs in the front, and 6 inch drop springs in the rear (Western Chassis). Has anyone done this before? I don't know anyone who has 4 inch drop springs in the front.

And I am assuming I would need a cnotch right? or is anyone running 6 inch drops springs in the rear w/o a cnotch?

front: 28 inches from bottom of fender to ground

rear: 24 inches from bottom of fender to ground

Re: Can anyone help me determine my ride height?

Information on factory dimensions, which includes body height at different locations, like door opening is available at the "GM Heritage Center" online. Go to "vehicle kits", then something like " other trucks" in the list of models. Next search different year for example '64, 65, 66. Under each year you will find different diagrams that list frame/body dimensions.

Re: Can anyone help me determine my ride height?

You are welcome,

Below are a few more details of the type of information on K 4x4 trks that I researched, this a small amount of the of the information available from "GM Heritage Center". Similar information for "C" trucks too. This information is spread out over the 60-66 trk kits. Looking at several different years will get you a more complete list of information. It takes a little bit of time to dig it out and see which model it is for, however, find it very useful for what was original.

"M" is step height, top of door sill, with door open:
Model K1434 is 24.22" at curb weight;
Model K1434 with max GVW options is 25.12 curb, and 23.87 loaded; and
Model K 3/4 ton max options is 26.12
Model K 1534 with max GVW options at curb is 24.81, and 23.87 loaded.

"N" top cab
'64 K1534 with max GVW options, curb is 77.95
'66 K10 is 77.51"; and
'66 K 20 is 78.41"

"P"is axle ground clearance
'64 K 1534 is 8" front and 8" rear curb and base, with max GVW options is 8.9" for front and 8.6 .......

The definition for "M" above is from forum member Keith Seymore, our GM source!

This thread might help you a little. you might have to do a little calculating.
I have tried a 6 in drop on the rear of my 62 and the axle would bottom out on the frame. I had already removed the bump stops. It haze a 5 inch drop right now with no issues. If I don't bag the rear I might try a 5.5 inch drop in the rear.

On my '63 the front is 31.25 inches and the back is 27.5 inches as you have measured. Tires will also make a difference. I have 30x9.5 15s. As you can see from the photo the front is slightly lower than the rear.

Thanks for the infos everyone

Here is my rear axle. Currently, I never bottom out. So I am guessing if I install shorter bump stops, I can use a 2 inch lowering block with no problems right?

(sorry for the cobbwebs lol)

Re: Can anyone help me determine my ride height?

By the looks of your axle photo, I'm going to guess that you have 4" drop springs. My truck had 5" springs, and the axle was about 1" from the factory length bumpstops. If you plan to lower any more, and plan to ever haul anything, you'll probably want to do a c-notch for more clearance.

Re: Can anyone help me determine my ride height?

my 64 c10 long fleet has Rear 4" drop springs and 2" lowering blocks with no Notch. It doesn't bottom out. now for the front I have 2" spring but had a coil cut out to give it a 4" drop. No good. Needs redone completely. Guy cut my lower control arms to extend out. Now I have to fix it all myself. Do it the right way. If your going 4" or lower do the disc conversion with drop spindles or learn the hard way.
