changing gear ratio on 68 chevy

I have a 68 with 456 gear ratio. I also have the enclosed axles. Would you change gears or the whole front and rear housing?

I guess your talking about a 4x4 since you refered to the "enclosed" axle. I guess what will determine which way you go will depend partly on your skill level. If you are doing the work and can swap the gears vs buyiing new axles and swapping them out or having someone do the work. You just have to check around and see which way is better for you. Better yet find somebody you can trade with. I'm sure some 4x4 owners would want those 4.56's.

ive got the 456 in a 68 also, with the stock tires 50mph is pushing it.junkyard for a newer 4x4 that scrap all but the axles ,you can buy them cheap.if you plan on a lift i would hold on,i plan on 35s and a 4" lift that should be great for towing.but i am also looking for a 3/4 4x4 close by,to rob the axles from.

I agree on the 50mph. What are the 456 worth? If I swap, do I need to have all the steering mechanism and etc? I think the 68 has a different steering arrangement.
