72 gmc 4x4 steelies
I want to buy some steelies for my truck but I have no idea what size they should be or were originally.
How do I figure out bolt pattern as well as the size needed for the 4x4 hub? And hub cap types? |

The search box at the top of the page just to the left of your user name is your best friend. Put in "bolt patter" and then click on 67-72 chevytrucks.com radio button.

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
1/2 ton would be 6 lug 15" and I'd guess 6" wide. Its common to use later rally wheels which are 8" wide.
3/4-1 ton would be 8 lug and 16" or 16.5" and I'd guess 6" wide. Just about any 8 lug for disk brakes from the big 3 should work up to whenever they went metric. I may be partially wrong... |

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
It's a short bed so it would be half ton, correct?
Its also a 6 lug. Thanks for the replies. Even you Orange Crate. |

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
If its a six lug it is a half ton. The bolt pattern for that would be 6x5.5" I'm not sure on the size of the hub.

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
I found some steelies for $125. I was told they are 15", 6x5.5, the hub hole is 3.5" which is what I measured on mine. They are "8 wide but with a 4.5 inch offset for fwd trucks(Blazers etc..)"
Would this work for my truck? Is that a good price? They're just the right color too! I'm not sure about the offset or if rims on my truck would need them... |

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
That's too much money for a set of rally wheels ,especially with no bands or centers.
if you want white factory style wheels and hubcaps you need to buy a set of military Blazer wheels .I've been paying $50 each for them and caps are around on here and ebay. if this is the look you are after |

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
Agreed. $125 should have caps and rings. That is a 50-75 dollar set of wheels.

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
Those are the cheapest Ive found. Only other listing on CL is $40 each rim, no rings or caps. eBay has em for $400 and up with rings and caps.

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
Clean bare 6-lug rally wheels seem reasonable at ~$25 ea. $125 not too bad depending on where you live. I scrounged for a 4 wheel set at salvage yards in NW MT where 4wds are common - was hard to find them.

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
Do you have any swap meets near you coming up? Always a good place to get an old set of wheels

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
Thanks for the replies. I've already committed to buying them at $100.
Another question, I guess too late to ask now since I'm buying them already, but would these look too small with the stock tires and the truck at stock ride height? Or should I be looking for a larger sizes tire? |

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
Thanks for reminding me. I'll have to look for swap meets. I know of one a month that's about 40 miles away but not sure which day. I need some other stuff for my truck.

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
What would be a good size tire for 15x8 wheels on my setup? 1972 gmc swb 4x4 no lift. I just want big enough to properly fill in the fenders as well as have enough clearance.

Re: 72 gmc 4x4 steelies
I would say 31x10.50x15. common size looks great on stock trucks. It may cause your speedometer to run a little slow because stock tires were smaller I believe.
