Off the shelf white paint for steel rims and bumpers
I've read through using the search function that the steel wheels and bumpers on our trucks were painted with paint code GM 521.
Has anyone found a "pretty close" match to this color using an off the shelf brand of paint?

Re: Off the shelf white paint for steel rims and bumpers
There was 2 whites used on these trucks im not sure what yrs. Started getting the more white white and not the ivory white.
When i did the wheels for my 71 i got appliance white from the local paint shop. i wasnt paying for the proper oe mixed color. They had the white i got on the shelf for way less $. I think you can get that in rattle cans too. The 67 got the proper 526 white on the wheels though.

Use the proper code to have some mixed for exact, or any gloss white for close.

Re: Off the shelf white paint for steel rims and bumpers
Here's my truck with the proper PPG paint code on the white of the body and "Standard White" on the wheels. It might even be correct for 8-lug wheels, we're not certain. But it doesn't look bad IMHO, even though I know they don't match exactly.

Same here. Gloss white Rustoleum Professional High Performance Enamel. Seems to be a good match, at least for my original paint 8 lug 16.5" wheels.

Re: Off the shelf white paint for steel rims and bumpers
Great information here guys! This is exactly the info I was looking for. This truck is nowhere near being an original resto. I'll be going with the Rustoleum White. Those look great.
Now to find a set of caps like that...

I also used rustoleum gloss white too. Then dulled it with flat clear. The gloss was just to glossy for my liking after looking at them. Just did these too as i just got $500 of new tires on her. Had them balanced on the inside to clean up the look too.

That wheel looks very nice. Did you use rattle cans?

Re: Off the shelf white paint for steel rims and bumpers
Sorry, didnt see this. But yes, i masked off the tires and painted the wheels with 3 coats from a rattle can, then 2 coats of flat clear.

Re: Off the shelf white paint for steel rims and bumpers
Oh, that does look good.
My dad painted all my trucks' wheels black many years ago, even so long ago he forgot they were originally white! I have been debating powder coat or painting but yours looks so nice perhaps spray paint is good enough for me. |

Re: Off the shelf white paint for steel rims and bumpers
Thank you.
Compare mine and firstowner's to see which suits you better. I used the same paint he did, just decided to dull down after i looked at them a bit more. Just make sure you mask the tires and valve stem off well.
