Oil cooler required?
Hey guys, just in the process of cleaning up my 5.7 for the install into the 53.
Was wondering if the oil cooler is required on these engines. I live in a fairly cool environment and it obviously won't be towing or hauling anything. Would just like to make the install as clean as possible and don't want the lines in the way. Also don't have the factory rad for the lines to go to anyway. So is it possible to just loop it or close the lines off at the filter? |

Re: Oil cooler required?
you dont need an oil cooler. lots of those engines driving around without them. you can pick up the spin on filter adapter and use the regular filter on block with no oil cooler. keep all the oil cooler parts in case you change your mind or sell them on kijiji if you really dont want them. do you have all he serpentine belt stuff as well?

Re: Oil cooler required?
Strikes me you may be talking about a transmission oil cooler. IMO, you do need that, if that's what you mean. You can mount it under the frame in a bunch of places so the lines don't have to be complicated. If you're talking about an engine oil cooler, what dsraven said is correct.

Re: Oil cooler required?
All you need to do is remove the oil cooler setup and bolt on the standard oil filter fitting for a 5.7 and screw on your Wix or Napa gold filter and done.
I did that on my wife's old former cop car Caprice when the oil cooler line decided to leak and replacements were far more money than I could afford at the time.

Re: Oil cooler required?
I can see where you may have thought that with reference to the radiator attachment. But no, I meant oil cooler. Will still have to buy a rad for a 53 that will have the transmission cooler attach points.

Re: Oil cooler required?
Is this standard fitting available from most auto stores? Haven't looked that close at mine, but are you saying that the fitting I have on there now with the lines just bolts on?

Re: Oil cooler required?
It is not a fitting but an adapter that is held on with two bolts, you should be able to get one from a auto machine shop or rob one from a junk yard no gasket is needed but make sure you get the bolts with it . They are 3/8 bolts with a 7/16 head .

Re: Oil cooler required?
Just google image chev 350 oil filter adapter. I will look through my parts and see if I have one. Otherwise picknpull or kijiji or auto value/napa/parts source could fix you up.

This has the photo and factory part number of the adapter. You might even have one on a spare block or can find one at Pick a part for a buck or two.
