Thumping noise from rear

I recently began noticing a thumping noise coming from the rear end of my 72 C10. It's only noticeable as I slowly pull into the driveway. The rear drums look fine but as I turn the wheel there is a slight squeak and then a thump sound like metal on metal. Would send a video if could figure out how to load it on here. I'm a newbie and will appreciate any information.

It might be the driveshaft carrier brg or a u-joint. If you checked the drums then I'm sure the wheel lug nuts are tight.

Thanks for your reply. I removed the drum and turned the wheel by twisting the wheel studs. It clunks as I rotate the wheel, twice per full rotation, in the same places as the wheel rotates.

I would check the u-joints first.

Re: Thumping noise from rear

If it happens when you are doing slow speed turns, or turning one rear wheel only, it may be an issue with the differential in your rear end. Does your truck have positraction? If so, it may be the posi unit.

You may wan't to take u-joint loose from the pinion yoke. You can check the u-joints good that way & then if you still get that clunk you need to take the cover off the rear end & check for broken teeth.
