71 Vin # help / short box?

Newbie- Trying to find out if this 71/c10 is a short box?

Vin# CS 141 A 632475

4x2
1/2 Ton
Straight Six
Atlanta

The frame seems to be all original until the very end of the frame. No bumper and frame is cut - told me its from taking off a trailer hitch?

Re: 71 Vin # help / short box?

decode is correct, but VIN won't tell you the wheelbase. If the truck has a SPID, there are two clues:
1) WB of 115 in upper right
2) Model Number: CS10734 = 115 swb (CS10934 = 127 lwb)
If no SPID, then a build sheet (under seat would help, IF it's still there) - but can't get out unless rebuilding the seat and ripping it all apart - unless you're lucky enough to have it between the seat springs and cushion face down.
Other than that - it comes down to an educated guess by the person onsite inspecting the truck. lwb's are not normally shortened to swb's at the rear behind the axle (without looking a little goofy) - it's normally done just behind the cab/bed junction. That would be the place to look for welds, fish plates, etc.

Thank you for the quick response - Yes, the frame looks clean and original except the rear. I'm thinking someone wanted to do a rear roll pan and just hacked it up.

An original frame should be stamped with a partial VIN into the top flange by the steering box. In your case it should be 1A632475

Re: 71 Vin # help / short box?

SS Tim - yes, its printed and matched but how to I ensure its a true short box?

I don't see anything behind the cab or elsewhere on the frame other then the back being hacked that making me second guess.

Thanks again

8" has to be cut off of the rear frame rails when shortening a long bed frame also.....

Beerman, the 4 = pickup with cab and bed. The 1 = 1971. This info is on the home page on the menu. It's called "vin and model # decoder". Here's the link if you can't locate it:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html

But like the other guys said, you need the SPID from your glovebox to find out if it was originally a lwb or swb.
