What aftermarket carb should I get?
I have a 1970 2500 with a 350, edelbrock performer intake and vortec heads. The previous owner disabled the choke on my quadrajet and with the edelbrock intake, I cant rebuild the factor choke anyway. I was leaning towards a 600 cfm holley 4160. I have stock headers. Does anyone have any opinion based on my vortec heads and performer intake, 600 should be a good fit? Any opinion on the 4160? I used a few carb calculators, but I was not sure if vortec heads and performer intake make a big enough difference to require more than 600 cfm?

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
Should be fine. I like both Holley or a Quadrajet depending on what you are trying to do. I have never had much luck with Edelbrock carbs, but that is just me. If you lean towards performance, then Holley is easy to tune. If you lean towards economy, then the Quadrajet is probably better.

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
600 cfm will be fine , Id go edelbrock , but holley is good also, if the carb you have on there now is a square bore , its 500 cfm , if it has big secondaries its a 750

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
Keep what you got and install an electric choke.
You might need to build a bracket to mount it but it's doable. http://quadrajetparts.com/electronic...evy-p-399.html |

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
That was my original plan, however the fast idle/choke linkages are missing, the previous owner used bread ties to keep the choke open and removed some parts. I thought it might be more trouble than its worth trying to rebuild it.

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
If you like to fiddle around with tuning, the quick fuel hot rod series has adjustable IFR, PVCR, and air bleeds. The Edelbrock carbs are easier to tune because you don't need to pull the fuel bowls to do most things. If money is tight, find a swap meet 1850 Holley and get a rebuild kit.

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
Do you have both square and spreadbody carb mounting holes in the intake manifold?
I really like the Q jets, they work great when rebuilt properly. |

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
I'd just buy a Summit branded electric choke Q-jet and call it good. They really are better for a mild driver than just about any other carb.
But I think I prefer the Edelbrock over the Holley, at least in the 600 cfm genre. Honestly, they are all pretty effective but the Q-jet is a much more high tech meter than the other two but that means being clean is more important to it as well.

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
I'm with geezer on this one, if it runs well when warmed up & isn't dripping fuel out of it, I'd convert to electric choke.
2nd choice, with Mike C, reman Q- jet. It's a shame edelbrock quit making new q-jets. Nothing wrong with holly or edelbrocks, I've run them all, but I believe you'll get better fuel economy from a q-jet. |

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
Remanufactured Quadrajet with an electric choke. Best all-around carb there is.

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
For my 1969 truck with a 350, National Carburetors built me a newer model Quadrajet with electric choke and old-style 1969 throttle linkage for about $189. By the time I paid for postage, some sort of $10 waste fee, and returned the core to them, the total was about $239. Perhaps I'll get fuel injection when I grow up, but for now I kind of like the carburetor.

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
Send your carb into Ken at Everyday performance, or ask him if he has a core to use and then you can save the shipping him your carb.
I have had him build many many carbs and he uses upgraded parts to handle the modern fuel that causes issues with the internals. He also custom jets the carbs for your application, test runs them on an engine, and then he offers good customer support. I built a 540 HP Caddy 500 engine and gave him all the specs like head flow, camshaft specs, compression, weight of the car, etc, and he delivered with a carb that bolted right on from 2000 miles away and was 98% spot on with the air fuel ratio at all throttle and load positions.... I have had LOTS of carbs done by him he is an engineer, and does the carbs on the side... WAY different than an assembly line reman carb, he takes his time and does it right. I sent him 8 cores the other day. Tell him Sean Buick sent you: http://www.everyday-performance.com/ |

Re: What aftermarket carb should I get?
Edelbrock, manual choke installed over 8 years ago. Have not even had a carb issue and it was a bolt on installation.
You see a lot of them for a reason. It is not the most fuel efficient or power building carb. |
