What Trans did I have?

This is my first heavy hauler and I'm not too familiar with them. It's a 1969 C6500. Picked it up for $300 and was gonna strip it, but now seeing everyone's builds, I want to build it now lol my question is, what kind of manual transmission was in here? The owner said it had a 427 tall deck bbc. I have a 366 tall deck that I was going to put in it, but was also wondering can I use a TH400? Will the th400 spin this huge rear axle lol thanks, Jon

Hi Jon, welcome to the addiction! In my opinion a TH400 is up to anything a 366 (or 454) in stock form could ever throw at it. The old Trans mount would have been on the bell housing sides and a single mount up front so you will need to fabricate a rear cross member for the Trans mount on the TH400 and then traditional side motor mounts for the engine. That is unless there were some factory TH400s in medium duty trucks, the only automatics I've seen were Allisons, they had bolt on mounts on the sides of the case...

Great project, I'm glad to see another one rescued.

Re: What Trans did I have?

only thing I might suggest is a th475 its the same but different gear units inside straight cut theeth if I recall. used a lot on big motor home chassis .

but as said even a good prepped / remaned th400 should hold up just fine other than building mounts and driveline for it .

if you were closer I could get you a smoking deal on a real low mile gmc V6 with tranny and even a spare tranny with a pto on it from the same vintage truck if you just needed to put around with it . all still in the frame with rosted body on it . should still fire up with fresh batt . last run this summer .

Re: What Trans did I have?

Thanks guys. Yeah I had a feeling about making a Trans mount which is no problem. As for the engine mount I found the original one that bolts up like a sbc in a 57 Chevy. Mocked it up already with the 366 and looks like it will work.
