Auxillary Fuel Door Covers??
Hi all. I'm new to the board and just bought a 1971 GMC K2500, and it's missing both auxiliary fuel door covers. I don't know if I'm just calling them the wrong thing, but I've searched everywhere and can't find replacements. Any ideas what they're called or where to find them? I was hoping for original or close to it.

I'd like to know too. The square aluminum door assemblies that allow access to my Travlin Tanks. Mine are hammered and I've been hoping run into someone parting a truck that has some nice ones.

Re: Auxillary Fuel Door Covers??
Do you mean like these? Bad pic. But these are on a parts truck I have and one key matches both sides. You might have to find old ones and get the lock fixed up if you can't find a key. This one has old slotted bolts and rusted right up so I'll have to drill them to get the doors off This truck had 5 fuel tanks. Behind the seat, 2 aux., 2 huge propane tanks in the rear

Re: Auxillary Fuel Door Covers??
Yeah that's what I'm looking for. It's strange because I've seen them on a lot of trucks but can't even find a google image of one, much less a replacement. I thought maybe I was calling them the wrong thing: fuel filler cover, fuel door, gas cover - I've tried them all...

doesn't look like you can find the old original aluminum ones anymore, I would like to find a couple of them myself, maybe at pick n pull. Etrailer makes a chrome plated steel one.

Keep checking the parts section on here as they occasionally come up on here. I see you are brand new member here so welcome to the best site on the Web.. If you become a paying member of this site you could post a Wanted to Buy ad on the parts board.

Re: Auxillary Fuel Door Covers??
I bought stainless aux doors from an RV shop a few years back. If I recall they measure 7" x 7"

Re: Auxillary Fuel Door Covers??
If you're still in the body work phase, here's an option. Lots have done it. I'm not personally a fan of the alum doors, although I do like to have gas, so I'd still buy a truck with em. But I've hoarded a couple fender fill aux tanks so I don't need em. That's another option for you - seek some of those out (I think AASmedic just put some on and they looked new), or, I've never considered it before, but converting some bedside fill to wheelwell fill might be possible.
EDIT: Here's a link to AASmedic's build thread, you'll see what I'm referring to there. Unfortunately, they were old tanks, not something you could order on ebay today, but might give you some ideas. If you already have holes in the bedsides (which it sounds like you do) and aren't undertaking a body project, then locating the alum doors would be the best bet (which is what you're doing and I've been no help...). They do look period correct for sure. Last edited by jocko; 01-13-2017 at 06:25 PM. |
