Tire width for stepside w/ 71+ rear axle

Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out what kind if tire width can be fit under a stepside with a slightly wider 71+ rear end, I'm not entirely sure of the backspacing of my rims but they are stock 16" stealies from a 78. Wondering if a 9" or 10" wide tire will fit. Any help appreciated

Re: Tire width for stepside w/ 71+ rear axle

Problem is the new rear is 3/4" wider per side and we dont have any info on the rim width and back spacing of the wheel you have. With out knowing the cross section width of the tire you are planning and how the rim size can affect it there are no real good answers available. Best anyone can do is maybe.

Re: Tire width for stepside w/ 71+ rear axle

Lifting, lowering, stock? Size tire desired? Purpose of truck? Load, weight, speed? Style rim, tire? Rim diameter desired? The list goes on. I have had 33 to 35" x 12.50 on 8" rims. 275 on 7". It's how the tire looks. The best bet is a tire store. My fleetside runs a 4.5" back space on 18x9.5 but a step is narrow so if cutting inner panel to accomplish this. Go with a nice 8" all around. Pull a rim measure from drum to fender. So a 8" rim 4" back space is zero offset center of rim. Flange thickness throws off measurements too. I had same size offset rims and one set worked other rubbed.
Confused yet?

Sorry I should've specified, the truck will be stock height 2wd, rims are 16" stealies from a 78 and are 6" wide and I believe they are zero offset (not 100% on that). The rims currently have 265/75r16's (10.4" wide) installed but I will not be using them as they are very worn. I was wanting to run about a 8" or 9" wide tire.

cHECK YOUR CLEARANCES(INNER AND OUTER) with the 10.4's and go from there. I'm guessing an 8" is about as wide as you can go w/o them rubbing as rear bobs up and down on the highway.*
Sam
*My 66 s/b-st/side runs 7" wide wheels w/zero offset. 275/70/15 is all I can clear on the rear, but mine has been lowered f & r(about 3 and 2", respectively), which will make a tad of difference--but not much, as rears do bob up/down as you hit patches and bumps in the road whether dropped or not.
