Does the original speedometer work? If so, I would just buy an over the counter speedo cable and hook it up. If the speedometer is very inaccurate then you'd need to replace the drive gear and/or driven gear in the transmission. These are color coded with a specific tooth count. I just went through this with my 700R4 and Dolphin gauges. This may help:

700r4's usually have a regular speedo cable hookup. Later 4L60E's are electronic.

If you have a 700r4 then it's just a matter getting a $15.00 speedo cable, hooking it up and seeing what happens. As jchav62 said, 4L60E's are electronic but you should be good with the 700R4. I just did the same with mine back in October but I had to get the correct drive/driven gears in order for the speedometer to read accurately.

Easy as stated. Hopefully the drive gear is a workable color and you only need to replace the driven gear like I did. GPS speedo app on the smartphone is handy to calculate how far it is off once working.
