Re: PLEASE HELP Trying to Install A van tilt in 68
69 to 72 have an intermediate shaft which connects between the column and the rAg joint, you need one of those and you will need to collapse it about 1.5 inches to accommodate the extra shaft length of the van column. Do a search here on the form for the details on how to collapse the shaft, its its clean and not rusty the easiest way is to bang the ag joint end on a concrete floor, quick and easy that way.

Are those your columns in the pictures? Looks like you have a non-tilt 69-72 column with lower shaft right there. Just swap that over.

Re: PLEASE HELP Trying to Install A van tilt in 68
Ok, sorry for the bad info. Thought that was a coupler. That area is all dark on my computer. Must have glanced over the second picture. I have one if needed. Won't help for this weekend. I hope you find one before the show.

Re: PLEASE HELP Trying to Install A van tilt in 68
Ok.. so i picked up a intermediate shaft yesterday and cleaned it all up also drilled out the plastic stoppers needed a little heat and collapsed it 1-1/2" hopefully will install tonight. Whats the best way to install the column? should i put it together first out side the truck? wheels are turned straight right now how can i make sure i line up the spline on the steering wheel end so my steering wheel is centered properly? Or does it even matter on our trucks?

The rag joint intermediate shaft and the column each only install one way.

Re: PLEASE HELP Trying to Install A van tilt in 68
It is extremely baffling to me why people feel the need to drill out those plastic injection points...does anybody really feel those would take any measureable amount of force to shear?

Re: PLEASE HELP Trying to Install A van tilt in 68
Have you tried to collapse one by hand? With a hammer? They just don't pop and slide with minimal force. Maybe they did when they were new or 2-5 years after that. Then throw into the equation rust/corrosion and it just became nearly solid.

Re: PLEASE HELP Trying to Install A van tilt in 68
I've done dozens by hand, bang it onto the concrete floor, did one recently.
The plastic isn't holding anything in place, it's the rust that holds them. In good shape the plastic shears with the first solid hit and I don't hit it very hard. |

Then you're very lucky you don't live in the rust belt.

Re: PLEASE HELP Trying to Install A van tilt in 68
Hmmm I tried several times banging it against concret floor also took a 5lbs sledge hammer to it wouldn't budge until i drilled it plus Kroll penetrating spray and heat then it moved. Couldn't get to it tonight to finish the swap but tomorrow after work, then head out to the show & shine Sat morning, fingers crossed all goes well.

Re: PLEASE HELP Trying to Install A van tilt in 68
I've never got one to move on it's own either. It's heat, penetrating oil, and a big vise for me...... I have two to do next week.

Re: PLEASE HELP Trying to Install A van tilt in 68
Same here. I guess we need to get some from WA to save some stress and time. A whole truck would be sweet. Maybe someday.
