292 dipstick length and capacity

Hey folks bought this 72 and have been driving it lots. The dip stick is too long, so I was running low on oil and the pressure dropped a touch.

I changed the oil and put 5 quarts in it pressure jumped back up. Should I mark it there or does the 292 take 6 quarts?

Might depend on what engine you have. The Chevy 350's take 5 quarts with a filter change. I don't know about the GMC engines....

The 292 takes six quarts.

292 will take 6 quarts if you include a new long-style oil filter like AC PF-35, Wix 51060.
I use 6 at oil changes.
Forget any V8 capacities, the L6 is a different animal. The 292 has a deeper oilpan than the 230 and 250, easily a quart more.
How is your dipstick too long? Not OEM? Finding a real 292 dipstick may be hard, half a century later, but they're out there.

I see you edited your post and added the 292. I wish you had stated it was a 292 before I posted my reply. That is why it is important to list all information on a truck when you ask a question.

Apologies I put it in the title but forgot to put it in the post itself.

Dipstick is way too long, who knows maybe the tube got chopped down at some point. I'll add another quart and then I'll mark it so I've got a mark at 6 quarts and the 5 quart mark I put on earlier for my high and low. I cut the extra length off so it's not contacting anything in the bottom of the pan.
