grease pencil markings

I was sanding down the firewall on my 67 pickup and found these markings under the original paint. The truck is ivory with blue interior. Anybody know what the "203" stands for?

"Ivory" is 528. The 203 could be an assembly line sequence number. Do you know which plant your truck was built in?

Ya know, I think I spent a couple of hours -- 35 years ago -- with Simonize rubbing compound and a lot of elbow grease cleaning off the "Graffitti" on my '68 C/10's firewall. Who knew it would be important someday? Oh well.

Could be worse. You could have thrown away the Mulroney window sticker plus some crpytic papers crumpled up in the seat cushion springs.

I figured so. I've got a 72 cab from st Louis that has yellow markings all over it. Seems all the St. Louis trucks have lots of graffiti on them.

I have a 71 built at Fremont, it has the original paint on the cowl. Is it odd that there are no grease pencil marks on it? There is no evidence that they were removed either. It does have the marks left by the painters though.

Did you happen to read through any of these threads (especially the one related to Fremont)?

I don't think it is particularly unusual, since it could vary by shift and by operator. Depending on if the plant shut down for break or did "tag" relief there could be a half dozen different people doing the same job in one day.

Thanks for the reply. I did read the other threads. While it seems that it was very inconsistent as to what was put on the firewall, I didn't see much mention as to having no marks.
Do you happen to know if the painters, when the left their "mark" on the firewall, did they ever leave a mark on the interior of the door?

Funny, you should mention that... Back in the late '70s, when I was cutting holes in the door panels for 5-1/2'' Jennsen stereo speakers -- I found a Build Sheet, in a hundred pieces, in the Passenger door. I saved the jigsaw puzzle in an envelope and kept it in my desk. I still have the same desk but now I can't find the puzzle. What I do remember was, it was a Fremont shortbed stepside truck, consigned to Felix Chevrolet, Los Angeles, and featured an L25 292, SM465, 7.00x17.5'' tires, WC Jr mirrors, and a deluxe ball-bearing ash tray, Fawn interior. No power anything, no radio [but a PO once had a VHF spike antenna thru the rooftop ] and 516 (Omaha) Orange.
I'm thinking it was part of a fleet order for Southern Pacific or CalTrans, who both liked orange.

Excellent.

It is inconsistent, because it was not an engineering requirement but more of a "help a brother out" between the guys in the assembly plant. No marks is certainly a possibility; my '65 GTO has no marking on the firewall (nor does my pickup, although it does have assembly sequence numbers on the hood, rad supt, grille and fenders).

The mark left by the Fremont painters was straight up "graffiti" and could have been punishable if found. As such they hid it where it would be covered up after the truck was assembled. I have never seen anything on the door, particularly where it would be quite visible.
