Those are Morels--the best eating mushroom in the world, bar none!! Wash them in cold water, pat dry, roll in seasoned flour and fry in butter or margerine--then set back and bless me for the greatest taste treat you've ever had!! Where I was raised
, (in Indiana) these are such a delicacy that people take vacations in the spring to hunt them. They sell for over $100 a pound in New York City and other metropolitan areas. Are you finding many?

Bill, I'm really curious about those mushrooms, I've never heard of them. I may have to come visit you one day, have the frying pan ready along with some beer. (everything goes great with beer) |

Ridiculing something you know nothing about is not funny, it's stupid. What's a better term for someone who does that?

I have edit this post due to the fact that I have realized yes I am still laughing at it, but smitty must be very offended. so I will just let him feel better by apologizing. I grew up in the country, were I did recognize the mushrooms. but thought others would get a laugh out of my stupidity sometimes.
sorry smitty for offending you if I may have.

Hang in there Smitty, we have to deal with them.
Randy70C-10, they are real good, you can't eat a bunch or you'll get sick, but a platefull and a 12 pack works great!!!!!!!

I'm suprised more of you haven't heard of them. They are of course called morels. I haven't had any yet but they seem to be very desired from most people i know. I've found some growing in Missouri along our creek bottom but never have bothered picking any.
My stepbrother goes on a morel-hunting mission in Montana every year. He seems to think he will strike it rich picking and selling them....hasn't happened yet, lol.

you can probably eat them raw as long as you wash them off, but I have never heard of that...I like em pan fried with real butter....mmmmmmmmmm. they arn't too common here in Ohio, but one of my buds had a ton growing in his woods, and we pigged out on em.

We've got 'em here. And I've definately eaten my share. But I must emphasize that not all Mushrooms are edible. Some are deadly.

They are morel mushrooms up here in Wisconsin. Its like a spring ritual around here to go out and find the first ones in the spring! They go for around $10 bucks a pound....roll in flour, pan fry in butter...but don't eat too many or you'll spend some time on the throne the next day The best place to look is near elm trees that have been dead for a couple years or so...just as the bark is starting to fall off. We stacked some fire wood in our yard a couple years ago and had morels growing where the stack was the next year.
