Emissions question
Anyone know what the emissions are for a '71 350? I need to get ol'yeller licensed and need to pass emissions. The standard is 4.5 ppm for CO and 1000 ppm for hydrocarbons. Just curious whether in stock form from the factory whether it would have passed.

Don't know about Colorado, but it's probably like AZ. HC's in ppm allowed is 450, CO in % allowed os 5.00. Should pass easily if well-tuned, and not too radically modified.

The state is not alowd to add to the standards set in 70 for a 70 model year vehicle. (grandfather clause)
What ever your truck was designed to polute, is how much it is alowd to polute. If it is stock, and is in good running order, chances are it will pass no problem. The visual test may be a killer though. Open air filters, valve cover breathers instead of return line to carb...stuff like that can kill your test thoguh EVEN IF IT IS UNDER POLUTING the visual can shut you down. (make any sence to you???) Best bet is to talk to your smogger guy before hand, ask to see the list of required items needed to pass BEFORE going to the sniffer. Knowing what is needed will prevent some uninformed kid from not knowing and giving you an unneeded no-go. |

This is probably true.
The government at all levels is jerking the chains of John Q. public. Notice, that with the exception of a few Cities, most of teh smog problems are in industrial cities. Even so, every level of gov, wants to blame the automobile. (Hmmm, think it could be the large smoke stacks you see on the edge of town pumping out tons of smoke???) Not only are they misleading everyone saying that autos are the problem, thy misguide everyone to believe that our pre-'74 vehicles are the "GROSS POLUTERS' In an average day, if you stand on a street corner all day, what do you think the persentage of pre-74 vehicles will drive by you? I'll be generouse and say 4%. (more like 2% in reality) Anyone here think that 4% is the nations problem? If we were to blame the autos, (which they are already, so it may as well be acurate) the ones that are our true gross poluters, are the many 1,000's of '89 - '95 or so vehicles, with 150K on the clock, that are still driven many miles each day...even if the check engine light is on. What would you guess the percentage of them would be going by you on that street in a given day? 50%? More? This is a true battle, and numbers don't lie. This is the point large enthousiests need to know when ballots are cast on smog stuff. SEMA is a good groupe to join and to support. They kill more klunker bills than one would guess. |

Yep, with a few exceptions, late 80's cars are some of the worst polluters around. The technology was such that brand new off the lot the cars passed emissions, but as things wore, emissions soared. And who was going to replace the major components every couple of years? You can get them to pass with minor tricks and tweaks that would last a couple of weeks, but then you are once again over the limit. I'm not worried about my '71 now, since it's in bone-stock condition, just needs a good tuneup and oil change.

Yup...EXACTLY.
Old vehicles are already built. What amount of polution goes into building a new car/truck? Not to mention...the tree huggers insist that you Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce. Sounds like they want us to restore more old stuff to me. (ok, that's a streach, but y'all get my drift) |

Some people have all the luck! Of course, I could register it in NE, and then just worry about the cops not liking that....

I'm right next door in Utah. SLC has a pretty rigid standard (dyno testing) but my 72 and 70 have never had problems passing. As far as the visual, you're not required to have any equipment that wasn't on the vehicle when it was built, so you shouldn't have too much problem. Depending on what you're running, you might want to put in a fresh set of plugs, change the oil, and reset the timing to factory specs.
