Blasting is a good idea, then use some special rust preventative paint (i.e. POR15, Rust Encapsulator) or you can opt to have someone prime and paint it with "industrial grade" paint, or you can use farm implement paint, or you could powdercoat it, or rattlecan Rustoleum, or prime and undercoat, or spray/roll on bedliner, etc. There are a lot of options.

what ever coating you choose do it right away. The metal will flash oxidize pretty quick and you'll end up trapping moisture and rust underneath. After sandblasting the blaster should be ablt to treat the metal witha rust inhibitor.

Dupont has a line of paint called: "Nason Automotive Finishes, Chassis Black" Part number 422-05. I was repainting the trailer for my fishing boat. It had some serious rust on it. I did not sand blast the trailer, it wasn't worth that much, I just used a wire cup on my grinder, then painted it. That was about 8 years ago and after hundreds of gravel roads and boat launches, it still looks great. It comes in a gallon can and it is pre thinned, but purchase some aeceton to clean up your paint gun. The paint did everything the guy at the paint store said it would. I think I bought it in Memphis on American Way. (Just moved to Dallas this year) Good luck!

how big is the hole, cuz just welding it shut could cause the frame to crack, it would be better to fishplate the whole area and make it stronget, but if it is a small hole then i wouldnt worry as much, if you blast all the rust out of it and dont drive it in the winter, and of course paint of over it, it should be just fine
