Heads for my SBC

I was wondering what would be the best heads for my 327 sb in my truck. I am looking to put some heads and a cam in. I was hoping to get the heads and the cam for under $600 total. My older bros were gonna help me put it all in. Iwas just wondering if you guys knew of any good heads that would give me about 50hp bolt on for a reasonable price. thanks!

For a stock engine Vortecs are the best bang for your buck. However, they take a different intake bolt pattern, which will put you over the $600 price limit.

You can get rebuilt big valve heads for under $500 and will leave you enough for a Summit cam at $90. Get the older 64 cc heads so you keep your compression up. I dont know what style accessory brackets you have, but you will need to make sure the heads have the same holes that your accesories use. You either have them or don't, easy to see. If you can find the old LT1 heads they have screw in studs and have the 2.02 intake valves.

aren't lt1 heads reverse flow so you can't use them on a standard small block chevy

2.02/1.60 camel backs plus they look cool on a 327 for someone who knows what they are looking at

He said "old LT1", they bolt up like any other pre 1986 head.

Somewhere on this board are some pics of cyl heads I have for sale, I searched but could not find at the moment. They are off a 70 350 camaro/corvette. Camel bump--194/150s hard valve seats, screw studs, guide plates, pc seals, surfaced, accessory holes. Completely rebuilt. $500.00 firm. Have had quite a few inquiries but no cash as of yet.

Arent the old LT1 heads the ones used in the early 70's? and weren't they prone to cracking and the performance really was terrible with this?

How about some heads off a 350 tpi camaro? For that cheap that would probably be the best choice.

Get some good used vortec heads, and a new cam and intake. You should be able to get some good used heads for 300-350. intake-100 or so, cam-100 for a total of total 500-550. you can find the heads on core motors that were pulled because of a rod knock or somthing. they will be cheaper that way and the knock dos'nt affect the heads.

The old LT1 heads are the best stock heads as far as performance and durability, they were used on the Vettes and 70-72 Z28, and an earlier version was used on the 67-69 Z28 but I think they had press in studs. The newer heads have 76 cc chambers and will have low compression, like 8 to 1 at the best with dished pistons used in the low comp engines. Anything after 1977 used the crappy lightweight heads, not much good for long life and cracking between the valves. The TPI heads are ok but not great for performance like the older LT1's are.

The vortec heads are an excellent stock head but you cant go over .480 lift on the cam with the stock springs. I have them on my 83 El Camino and they work great. I would spend the extra $200 and get the whole kit new though, its around $700 but you get the assembled heads, head bolts, gaskets, choice of performer or performer RPM intakes, rocker arms, pushrods and sopme other things. If you buy used heads you may have to rebuild them which will be way over new by the time you factor in labor and parts on top of the initial purchase.
