Coil wire replacement question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Reciently i hired a supposeably mechanic to replace my th350 trans and the guy pinched my coil ign. Wire between block n trans. Well when i hit the key it went to ground,dead short,fried the coil to switch wire. I need to replace it but as i understand it its a resistor wire to cut voltage to coil. Guys i dont want to go hei ign. What route do i need to go in fixing this problem.

I take it your "supposeably Mechanic" isn't taking responsibility for the damage?? Replacing the resistor wire is a simple process.. Remove the wire from the harness and install a replacement.. If you are unable to locate a source of new resistor wire, salvage one from a donor vehicle. All GM vehicles of that era employed a resistor wire in the ignition circuit. Another option is to install a ballast resistor in series with a "regular wire"..

Solder won't "stick" to the wire so you'll have to resort to very well installed crimp connectors.. Factory type terminals are available.. Check to be sure no other wires or components, including the ignition switch were damaged by the heat..

If that piece of wire is still smashed between the engine and bellhousing, I would want it removed.

As a premium member, I have had good luck just posting the question does any of the many people who has replaced their wiring harness have their old harness laying around and wouldn't mind selling pieces of it. In my case I was looking for some plugs and I made a deal with somebody to send me some for a reasonable charge. The non-adhesive vinyl tape that the factory wrapped the wiring with is available from a variety of catalogs and from Amazon.
