Went to the strip last night.. sorta disappointed
I went to the local dragstrip last night - it was hot out! I was a little disappointed with the results :
14.918 @ 93.403 RT.653 1st run win against a camaro 14.463 @ 97.049 rt.739 2nd run win againsta mustang 5.0 14.438 @ 95.178 RT.724 3rd run win against a ricer 14.515 @96.323 RT .738 4th run win against firebird 14.239 @ 97.233 RT .700 5th run loss against saleen supercharged 5.0 14.918 @93.403 RT .653 6th run win against a lightning (old style ) I was running hot all night and couldn't get the truck lower than 190 degrees I was expecting to get into the 13's ! I was so annoyed about the times that when I got home, I ordered the richmond 4.56 ring and pinion to replace the 3.73's I am running - will this make a big dif? - I just replaced the trans with the superbuilt 4L60 E and the 2500 stall + 28" MT ET street slicks ( which kept spinning after I launched even after I burned for 20 seconds almost every time~!) by the way, anybody have an idea what a 67 longbed w/ wood would weigh? |

The new gears wont help if you cant put the torque to the ground through the tires. You gotta get the slicks to quit spinning if you want to do any good.

if you're spinning the tires with 3;73's you're going to spin them more with 4;56's, you might try less air pressure maybe 12-14lbs. as far as lowering the temp, what are you using to try and lo9wer it? the onlny real effective way is with a heat exvhange unit or by running freash coolant thru the motor after each run

Maybe you are burning the tires for too long before the runs? I really don't know, but sometimes, too much in the bleach box might have negative effects on traction...
Look at the bright side, you still beat other cars even with the low traction

Are you doing your burn outs in the box? I always go into the box and spin them over and then pull up about 5 feet to get out of the water. Then I do my burn out and pull straight up to the line. What kind of 60' times are you running? What were your 1/8th mile times?

I was running slicks at 14PSI ( Mickey thompson ET streets )
but they have seen a little excessive street action so they are getting to be a little worn in. - I think I'll get a pair of hoosier full on slicks just for the track next time. as for the 30's, 60's and 90's they were: 30's in order 60's in order 90's in order 2.17 5.99 9.15 @ 77.7 2.22 6.15 9.36 @76.2 2.27 6.14 9.35 @76.8 2.15 5.96 9.22 @74.9 2.22 6.11 9.55 @71.9 what else could I really do, but park the tuna boat and drive my 70ss nova to get these times down. |

What RPM are you launching at? Bring the RPM's down a little bit on your launch to stop spinning those tires

Just make sure that you get the tires good and hot. Don't do a burn out in the box. Spin them over and get them wet, then pull out where it is dry and do your burn out.

Primed 67 Is Right About The Box, Spin Em Over Then Pull Out Of
The H20, If U Spin To Much In The Box It Spray's Fenderwells W/ H20 And Then It Will Drip Onto Ur Tires While Staging. I'm Not Real Sure About Ur Times Though Because I Run 1/8 Mile Here And I Get 2.15 - 2.20 60 Ft. Times W/ A Stock 400 And 3:73 Gear, Of Course That Is A 9.55 Here W/ A Powerglide. ( Needed 350t ) Of Course I Sold The Truck Last Week So I'm Done For Right Now.

one thing to remember is that your foot brake stall speed might decrese with the lower gears. my buddy used to race a 62 chevy p/u that ran mid 11`s and he said he got the best time with a little spin off the line. not much maybe 1 or 2 rotations. when he dead hooked, the truck bogged down and ran a little slower.

I agree with the others about the gearing, 4.56s will just make it worse.
You need to address the traction issues. Some weight movement may help. (Battery to the back, fuel tank out of the cab?) "Looser" shocks on the front. As crazy as it sounds, maybe adding some weight behind the rear axle, near the tailgate might help. Long wheelbase trucks always have traction problems, front to rear weight ratio is way off. I wouldn't worry about 190 degrees at all, that's not hot. |

there's gotta be something wrong then. I've gotta do something. I have relocated the battery to the back, have lighter buckets I have all the un-necessary items removed ( heater box inner & outer )
the only things that I have that are heavier is the big block radiator and the blower (B&M 144 ) the tires aren't spinning that bad either - I called the guy who went racing with me yesterday and he said I only spun off the line for a few turns, then hooked - I do actually pull around the water box most of the time if I can help it. but you'd think with a blown 350 I'd be runner something faster than that. - I actually see losing a little time because of myself - I weigh 290 at 6' 1'' so I may add a little extra to the time... It won't matter anyway soon - today I started production on a beauty!! 350 4 bolt main, bored to .20 add stroker crank, stroker rods and world heads b&m blower high lift cam / roller rockers and my little blower. add some thorley tri "y" headers off the "old" motor (has less than 4K on it) and voila! 550 hp! that ought to do it. - two thousand bucks is worth 1.5 seconds right.... right? |

With more power and lower gears you will probably just spin more.You will definitely need to address the traction issues with the new motor and gears.

I think you should stay with the 3.73's for now until you get some traction maybe some ballast in the bed? Theres got to be a happy medium between tractiona and added weight. also if your serious get some 90-10 front shocks or even 50-50's and disconnect the front sway bar if you have one.

have you tried adjusting the pinion angle to get the tyres to dig a little better? are you manually shifting it? sorry if these are stupid questions...

I got to looking at the tires just alittle while ago, and realized that they are wore to the steel belt in the inner sides and some int he middle - I wonder how I even got through tech inspection on that one.. new tires are in order I think.
I adjusted the carb before I came in tonite and added a phenolic spacer between the blower and carb - took a spin down the freeway access road way off in the boonies - my gtech pro reader says 13.83 at 105 mph... I think I may have just fixed whatever was wrong with it. anybody else use those phenolic spacers with any luck? |

Isn't drag racin' fun?.... I have to disagree a little about the 4.56's causing more wheel spin. You need to "plant" the tires to hook. You w ill gain more a mechanical leverage advantage with the 56's. I run MT ET streets, and when I changed to 56's from 3.73's my 60' time went from 1.82 to 1.68. Also you should see an increase in stall with the 56's. I do agree you have some tunning problems(or something). Your MPH is only showing about 290 RWHP. Traction has very little to do with MPH. How do your plugs look?

The phenolic spacers are good at reducing the heat. They help keep your carb cooler which in turn allows your fuel to be cooler so it runs better.
What size wheel and tire combo are you running? Is your rear a posi? I'm not currently running as much horsepower as you are with your blower but I'm running around 425. I also had spinning issues so I got rid of the stock springs and put a coilover shock setup on the truck. I still need to adjust the pinion some but but my new set-up helped tremendously. I've made one pass on it since the update and my 60' times dropped by 0.3 tenths on that run. I now am running a 15 x 12 wheel in the back with 29.0 x 15.50 mickey thompson tires. The tires are a harder compound but now I have an extra 2" of wheel on each side helping me put more rubber to the ground. I haven't ran it with the new wheel and tire combo. It might not help much but on the street it hooks a lot better. I'm saving for a good set of slicks right now and I plan to rework the rear setup before I go back to the track. One other thing you might try if you haven't allready is to replace you trailing arm bushings.

what rpm are you topping out at through the traps? if your spinning off the line and topping out well before the finish line you might want to try a taller tires.... launch will not be as hard but wont spin and you top end will be higher...
