Inline 6 EGR tube removal

Hi,

I’m hoping someone is familiar with these and has successfully removed them. I assume they are the egr “intake” tubes. They are located in the exhaust runners of my 292 cylinder head. I’m rebuilding the head to use on my engine for towing and I want to remove these “flow-killing” apparatus’. Thanks in advance.

I recently removed one of those tubes from a ram horn manifold I am going to use. I drilled each end of the tube with a bit that was just enough to take some of the tube away without opening up the hole in the casting.

I then drilled with a 21/64 bit and tapped each end to fit a 1/8" NPT (tapered) plug. The plugs fit nice and snug and hopefully stay in place. Picture below.

For me the 1/8" NPT plugs worked because the holes in the casting were not very big to begin with.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose drilling them out would work. Did you use a thread sealer when you plugged the newly tapped hole?

The tubes are for the AIR pump.
I’ve cut them off before and just plugged the threaded end.

The hole in the manifold that oh boy posted is for the hot air choke.

Where in Alberta do you live?

I had those tubes in my 250 head. Someone had already plugged the holes where the A.I.R. tubes hookup but left the little tubes in the head.

I didn't even need to drill out the tubes. They just slid out.

Which direction did they slide out? Into the exhaust runner or out the threaded hole?

I didn't use a "thread sealer", but did use some high temp thread locker, mainly because I had some on hand. It will be months before I put the manifold back on, so I won't know if the plugs leak for a while.

I thought about plugging the holes, and then using some black RTV sealer on the inside, but I’m not sure if it will stand up to the heat in that environment.

The thread locker I used specs to 450* max temp, which isn't as high as I would have liked, but like I mentioned, it is what I had on the shelf.

I have used Permatex Ultra Copper Maximum Temperature RTV on my Harley exhaust system, which is rated at 700* max temp with good results. I wanted to use that on the threads but couldn't find it. I'll try that in the future if I have any leaks.

I media blasted the manifold and coated it with Eastwoods exhaust coating. It looks pretty good and the small plugs blend pretty well.
