H4 headlights or LED?

'84 Chevy K20, gonna put better headlights on it. I LOVED the Hella H4 conversion I had on my '72 K10! I ran 100/55 watt bulbs and MAN were they awesome! (yes, I know they weren't "legal" but since you don't run your highs at oncoming traffic, what's the harm?) But that was 20 years ago. LEDs and projectors are the new darlings, but I've seen reports that they do not reach out like the old H4 bulbs. I liked how far down the road I could see, watching for animals and such.

Anyone have any input on which direction I should lean?

And what's with the LED bulbs that fit in a H4/9006 housing? are they worth looking at?

Obviously the energy requirement is far greater with the H4 bulbs. 100 watts per side is a lot, but bulbs can be bought at any podunk backwater burg across the US. And projectors aren't "legal" as a retrofit, from what I understand.

Re: H4 headlights or LED?

here is my truck with 4 j.w. speaker led conversions installed . these can be had with or without heater grid for ice / snow driving .

all i can say is 2 things .

no one has flashed me as they have a crisp hard cut off line on top to not flood and blind people coming at you like lots of others do out there for cheaper prices .

and i will NOT drive at night anymore unless its in my truck with these lights unless i 100% have no choice .

hands down best money i have ever spent on a simple plug and play upgrade that works .

2 night pics are low beam only as i tested the low first before i ordered the high beams .

pic 1 = my truck .

pic 2 = stock halogen every day bulbs on low .

pic 3 = just low beam j.w. speaker installed .

note : there is a sign on the air port fence and mail box and telephone pole you cant see on left and just the mail box pole on right no box . then with the low only of j.w. speaker there all there . also you can make out the pole right before the mail box thats a older darker color pole with the led lights that you can not even see in the before pic .

and these are from my crappy 2meg pixel camera phone . real lift view is 10x better .

these pics were taken from my driveway to the end of the street at the airport fence . the pole left to my mail box is just over 100 feet . my mail box to the end of the street at the fence sign center of pic is around 300 feet range .

Re: H4 headlights or LED?

I put h4 lenses in mine with h4 led bulbs and couldn't be happier. Looks stock at day and crisp bright white light at night

Re: H4 headlights or LED?

I'm using the Hella H4 conversion in my 80. I'm even just using the bulbs that came with it, and no relays... and I love it. I'll be adding relays next year (not enough driving season left and the truck has been down all season doing an LS swap.) Huge improvement over the stock sealed beams, wide array of bulb choices, stock appearing (even though my truck is lowered, and wont be very stock appearing, I strongly prefer the look of the stock headlights to LED or projectors in these.)

Re: H4 headlights or LED?

You cant go wrong with the trucklite leds other than the cost. There are other brands but they suck.
