1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

Anyone out there have a picture of what the original 4WD interior boot and retaining ring/plate looks like? I have what I think is my original and have not been able to find a photo to reference. I believe 71 and 72 were the same - are they also same as a blazer? I have (2), a plain ring and one with the markings 4L - N - 2H - 4H .... trying to put my Super Cheyenne back to all original. Thanks in advance.

Re: 1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

Thanks - I took a picture of mine (the one in question) - is this one a 71-72 version? It has been with my truck since I bought it 30 years ago.

I have never seen one like that one. Mine is like the one jcfcamaro posted.

That is pretty interesting. Was your ring painted black originally? It definitely does not look homemade, but I have never seen one before like yours.

Re: 1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

Yes, it was - I had bead blasted way back in the day - carpet was black so I like the cast iron color contrast. There is a "C" stamped on the backside. This truck was all original when I bought it. Handle and Knob are original as well ... kinda has me stumped.

A Cheyenne Super should have had a chrome shifter with the shift pattern molded into the shift knob. Does yours?

Here are few examples of other 4x4 Cheyenne Supers.

Yes, mine has a chrome shifter handle (needs re-chromed) and a knob that looks just like the one you posted, my boot is also the same - the only difference is my boot retainer. Here is the truck when I bought it back in 1986.

The one you have does kind of look home made to me. Although they did a nice job.

Re: 1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

It seems pretty unlikely that a previous owner would take the time to make that if the knob had the shift pattern. Makes me wonder if that was an original prototype and that was all they had on the shelf that day at the factory. Really weird.

Re: 1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

I appreciate all the insight ... this has been a great discussion - here is the knob from the truck, trying to find the shifter handle, was in another box. I don't think it was homemade. The letters on the retainer measure almost 7/16" high.

Re: 1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

I bet a dollar it’s homemade. Look at the standings, that doesn’t look like it came from a factory to me, the way the surrounding areas on the stampings are dented specifically. Also where the plate is welded to the ring isn’t overly clean and crisp like what I would expect to come from a factory piece.

Interesting piece, could it be a aftermarket product?

Re: 1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

The boot should have a GM part number stamped on it too... Might tell you if it is aftermarket or not, which might give another clue on the retainer.

Re: 1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

Here is a picture of the back ... the back as the ridge all the way around, but the front is smooth. Back has the dimples where the letters/numbers where embossed into it. The boot only has the "Front" marking around the front hole - so it maybe aftermarket. You guys could be onto something maybe it is an aftermarket part - what would the "C" marking be? Also you can see where the sides are not perfectly machined. The overall piece is very stout - not cheap feeling. Maybe back in the day this was sold by someone?

Re: 1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

The shift position stamping looks too crude to be a GM piece.

I wonder if it wasn't from another manufacture's truck. IH, Dodge etc...

Re: 1972 Chevy Truck 4WD Boot and Retainer Ring

The font looks to match the shift pattern floor plate used in '73 and newer square body trucks. Although those were raised characters not stamped. All of the oval shaped boot retainer rings I've seen are installed with the ridges facing up and smooth side down.

I was hoping to see a weld on the backside but no. The mystery deepens...

It looks like it’s welded/metal finished across the top to me.
