Driving/fog lamps idea

I was thinking, if I put a 71-72 front bumper on my 70 are there driving lights that would mount in the openings instead of parking/ turn signal lights?

Might try doing a search for such as seems I recall seeing just that very thing being done some time back in a member's thread. May take a bit of engineering and fab work to make the mounts but I'm sure it can be done. Just be aware that driving lights (clear lens and bright) and fog lights (amber lens and bright) are not one in the same.

Before I retired I drove about 35 miles one way a lot in the early morning hours during all sorts of weather, rain, sleet, snow, ice, fog and even nice clear weather also, LOL. I had a 72 1/2 ton at the time and mounted the FOG lights to the top of the bumper. Ran them on a toggle switch, worked out well. The amber fog lights WILL make a difference in vision but need to be mounted lower than the actual head lights. Most states actually have a rule for the height of mounted fog lights or driving lights.

I tried this many years ago and never found anything that looked right, I ended up doing 4" holes in it. You may have better choices now though.

I'm kind of interested in this myself as it'd look better than aftermarket pods hanging below the bumper

As Andy says, there’s a lot more choices now than there used to be. I’ve got two sets of LED lights that are small and rectangular, that would probably work. I went the same route as Andy though, as I measured and cut two 4inch holes in my 70 bumper. The lights really help on the back roads around my house.
I got the idea (before a saw Andy’s truck) from the bumper that LMC carries, but I didn’t want Chrome, so I did it myself

Thanks guys. I do like the look of the round lights in the bumper. I think i'll put this on my future list of upgrades

Fog lamps don't need to be amber, though many of them do have amber lenses. Clear fogs are also common. Whether it's a fog lamp or a driving lamp is determined mainly by the beam pattern, which is determined mainly by the design of the reflector and the lens. In a nutshell, fog lamps have a beam that is very wide, has a sharp horizontal cutoff, and does not reach far ahead of the vehicle. Driving lamps have a narrower beam that reaches farther ahead to augment your headlamps' high beams.

I'm going to do the front bumper on the 68 like the one on my 71 when I get time. It maybe a little different but basicly the same thing.

These are factory fog lamps from a 1957 Cadillac I added to mine. Glass front lens Looks period correct and the bulb has a cover on it to make it act as a true fog lamp. They are adjustable like the headlights as well. I am adding led bulbs to mine as I did all the other builds in my truck.

Those are kool lights sir! I'm sure they aren't cheap either. If you can find them.

Thanks. The lights are not too bad if you can find them. It's the bumper from the car that's brutal expensive. I needed it to cut the ring out of to mount it into my bumper otherwise the lights don't seat to the back of the bumper nicely.

I tried to put a '72 bumper on my '68 C/10 Stepside with the idea of fog lamps in the cut-outs. Didn't work because the mounting brackets are different. A friend with a chrome shop helped me out by trading the '72 bumper for a '67/'68 bumper and having one of his guys cut out slots for fog lamps and chroming it. I ran the chrome bumper with amber fogs [from Sears] for a while, then went back to the stock white bumper on the Stepside after a fender-bender.
I later had a '67 K/10 Suburban. In 1994 I hit a deer head-on just south of Tombstone. It needed a new grille and front bumper. I re-used the chromed one with the cut-outs. Only drawback was that I needed a bigger generator to run them at night, with wipers, heater, headlights, CB, cop scanner, and jamming stereo etc. Or the battery was quickly dead.
I had a machinist make some truncated cones so the foglamps could mount inside the reverse slope of the inside bumper. They were bright in their day. Quartz-halogen.

This took a keen eye and a decent amount of work to pull off. I'm a fan.
