68 short box advice
Looking for advice.
I have a 68 short fleetside 2wd, number matching 396/th400/dana60 rear, custom cab with alot of options such as AC,tach, to name a few, plus dealer installed spot light, it's completely rust free and straight as a arrow. It's had 1 repaint and I'm the 3rd or 4th owner.so all in all pretty rare truck. I haven't driven it in 3 yrs and debating to start driving it again, but the thought of getting hit by someone scares me. There's sentimental value as it was my dad who bought it as the 3rd owner and he passed away last yr. But I do have other cars of his. My big question. Do I put it back on the road and run the risk, which would be a shame if something happened. Or do I sell it and buy another, less rare short box and be cash positive, It will be daily driven during the seasons.the money isn't the issue, being a car guy, it would be a shame to see something happen to it. What would you do?? |

Please just keep it and drive it. It is a wonderful truck but no amount of extra cash will replace the memories of your dad. Nice photo BTW! What is more rare than your truck would be to find a service station attendant that looks as attractive as that young lady!

I also have a 1968 Chevy C10 SWB factory 396/400 turbo black with red interior but mine did not come with AC.
I say keep it and enjoy. |

I have 12 cars, 6 were his, he bought it on a whim knowing I'd want it,he never drove, it's been mine for the past 6yrs, there's still sentimental value, but I have others with more. On the flip side,it was daily driven,year round in Arizona from 1972-2008 and nothing happened, so am I being too cautious?

If you are willing to sell it to someone who may make it a DD and wreck it what's the big deal? Drive it when the weather is nice and think of dad every time you are behind the wheel. He will be smiling down at you cruising around in it.... LockDoc

You're asking truck guys, on a truck forum, if you should drive or sell a big block swb truck. I doubt too many guys here will tell you to sell it. The correct answer might depend on what other cars you have and how attached you are to them.

The truck is just a thing, the memories exist in your head and the truck just brings them to the forefront. What would your dad tell you to do? Mine would tell me to drive it as it was meant to be driven. Share your stories with those that ask about the truck and make even more memories with it.
Just my opinion though. I like good looking cars and trucks but the practical, driven ones have my respect.

As my signature states. It's not point to point driving it's the fun in between the points. Drive it. Get the right insurance and drive it. Most will cover it if something happens.

One question...what does it really mean to u? He left u several autos so....which 1 means the most? If this truck means alot then drive it. Even if its only 1 day a week for a few miles. U said u have 12 rides so...something needs to go. If this truck ranks kinda low on your memories of u both and it doesn't really mean much to u then sell it. But.....sell it to someone who knows without your advise of how rare it is . That person will take good care of it and they will drive it as it was meant to be.My dad only left me 1 truck cause that's all he had and its NOT 4 SALE.

This question reminds of the guys who want to sell all their legally owned and properly stored firearms after some psycho goes nuts and kills people. The guns are better off with those guys than being out in the market.
It’s safer with you than with someone else. Hell, you could sell it to me and the first thing I’d do is lower it, change the wheels probably add fuel injection and drive it like I stole it. It’s better off with you

I get that it's sentimental, but at the end of the day it's just sheetmetal. It will sit and deteriorate even if it's parked, so get out there and enjoy it. If my dad passed away tomorrow, he would want me out driving and enjoying his truck that we built together.
