The new "He shed"
Moved about 4 years ago and have not had a shop to work out of since. I have a garage that was just big enough to put all the tools and equipment in along with my two bikes. All my parts and other stuff went in a conex. Started planning this about a year ago and shopped everything from stick framing it to metal buildings. This is what I wanted, 40X40 with 14 foot clear inside and a lean to on one side. Steel won out over a pole barn for many reasons including cost, insulation and having wood in the ground where I live. Settled on Ironbuilt steel buildings after looking at one and talking to the guy who put it up. I liked the quality and the fact he had a good looking building and got good customer support. I had quotes from two other company's and these guys were very competitive. So here is the progress to date and hope to stand up all the steel next week.
Jimmy Getting the area ready in this series and the layout of the building.

Re: The new "He shed"
In this set the concrete goes in. 42 yards of concrete, 3500 pound with fibers.

Re: The new "He shed"
The steel got here Friday the 31st. Started to lay it all out and to build up all the columns and the frame work. This takes a while and also took a bit to figure it all out. Got good drawings and set of instructions that show how some of the parts go together. There are a lot of parts in one of these and may be overwhelming to folks with out construction experience and being able to read drawings. I have all the pieces ready to be set and all the perlings and girts sorted to where they go. This should save time and ease the work when the crane gets here. When your being charged by the hour you need a good plan and plenty of help.

Re: The new "He shed"
Slab is 6 1/2" thick and 8" where the lift goes. Footer is 18X18 and the piers for the columns at 24" square. A bit of overkill but I don't have to worry what I put in it. There is 25 tons of rock under the slab. Another 100 tons out front. Next pour for under the lean to is 16X40 and will take only 8 or 9 yards.

Re: The new "He shed"
Ahhhh....nothing like a good overkill....haha...I was doing the quick math and was going "whoa"... mine is 4in and I wish I had done it thicker...course, concrete was only about $60/yard back then

Re: The new "He shed"
Well its a tad over $60 now. Most the 10,000 lb lifts require 6" and that is why there is 8" where the lift goes. I had a thick floor in my last shop and I liked the solid base with the lathe and the mill mounted to it.

Re: The new "He shed"
Nice planning.
The extra concrete will help with heating and cooling the shop. Will you have a lathe and mill in this shop? .

Re: The new "He shed"
3500 with fibers is $150 a yard here now and $177 retail if you don't have a commercial account. Plan is to leave the lathe, mill and the surface grinder in the other garage for now. I know where there is another mill that I may get to put in the new shop. Got to recover from this build and get back to work before buying any more equipment. Richard come visit and bring a crane. I'll put you to work and buy dinner.

Re: The new "He shed"
Started setting steel today. This is the left side wall and the lean to. Started on this side because it has the most structure in a small area. Gives a rigid base to work out from. My process of measure 10 or 12 times in as many ways as I could to ensure the bolts were in the right spot before pouring concrete seems to have worked out. There are 32 anchor bolts in this area. All the steel fit and everything lined up.

Looks like you will be done before I could even get down there. Looks like it will be a nice setup when done.

Re: The new "He shed"
Going to rent a telehandler next week to set the high stuff. Still welcome anytime. Oysters are good this year and all I need to do is make a phone call to get em fresh right off the boat.

Re: The new "He shed"
That telehandler is probably a smart move vs the crane.

Re: The new "He shed"
Yup after calling the local crane guys and getting the lowest price of $150 an hour and a 4 hour minimum I can rent a telehandler for a grand for a week. Will come in handy for lots of things.

Re: The new "He shed"
Ok time for an update. I have been able to get a bit more steel up. Beginning to look like a building. So far the fit has been good and it is going together nicely. Some things take a bit longer with this being my first metal building project. Just for scale my buddy that has been helping me is 6 foot and 250 lbs.

Re: The new "He shed"
Scale won't work on the weight side. The bill of lading for the delivery was over 18,000 pounds. It is about 18" at the top of the beam.

Re: The new "He shed"
And you will be like the rest of us the day after it is done and wish you would/could have gone twice as big. I started with 40x60 and have added a 20x40 on one end and a 24x35 on the other end and at times still wish I had more space, just wish it was easier to heat.
