redoing headliner ?
Just in the process of fixing the sagging headliner and starting taking off the old glue and it pulls off like paper and leaves the fiberglass type headliner. I read on anther truck forum that he sprayed the headliner after it was cleaned with a polyurethane spray and let it dry and then used glue and put on headliner in the normal fashion. Is this a good idea to spray something on the headliner to help hold the fibers and make the headliner more uniform ?

Re: redoing headliner ?
you could spray it with an aerosol clear coat

Re: redoing headliner ?
Just wondering if the glue and headliner would pull off the clear coat ?

When it comes to almost everything including adhesives, surface prep is everything. Simply carefully cleaning the scuzzy old foam worked for me, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear additional efforts may work as well.

I just did mine no clearcoat just removed the foam from the cardboard . Used weldwood landau top high heat resistant glue sprayed on with an old binks N° 7.

Re: redoing headliner ?
The foam just brushed off with a scrub brush . The hitch was for weight I lightly moistened the cardboard and placed weight on it to remove the sag worked out well.

Re: redoing headliner ?
Like others here, had the same problem with my 1988 Suburban, but decided to go another way.
Now, the Suburban has the old fashion "vinyl and bow" headliner with sound deadening (Dynomat) along with 3M™ Thinsulate™ Acoustic Insulation SM400L for heat/cool and sound control. Also thought the vinyl-bow was a more classic look than the fuzzy stuff. Enjoy, |

Re: redoing headliner ?
I’ve done several headliners, and never needed to spray anything but the adhesive glue on the headliner board. All the old foam can be removed using a wire brush. Then spray about half the the board and half the headliner material. Once that half in done, move to the other half. The adhesive I use is the High Temp for high heat area, like headliners.

Re: redoing headliner ?
Thanks for all the suggestions. Making headway on removing the old stuff, wear a mask, it bothered me at first. The only trouble is none of the products you mentioned are not available in Can. I had no luck with super 77 on simple projects. Might try loctite high heat adhesive

Re: redoing headliner ?
Try an upholstery shop they should be able to steer you right direction to buy the glue. Or many even sell you some.

Re: redoing headliner ?
1 can for a regular cab pickup. But I like to keep an extra can on hand just in case.

Re: redoing headliner ?
All this talk about headliners -- Did all trucks come with a headliner?
Mine doesn't have one. It's just steel overhead. Was it removed at some point, or was it only included with the high-optioned trucks?

Re: redoing headliner ?
Some trucks did not come with headliners. But they can be added, you just need the interior headliner trim and headliner.

Re: redoing headliner ?
I tried some super 77 on some material on the side panels on my Blazer and it started letting go after a year. We get some real hot weather here in the Okanagan valley. I talked to a upholstery shop and she said she uses Lepages contact cement from Home depot but she doesn,t do headliners as no one wants to pay her for all that work at $85 a hour
