SBC starter motor madness!

Hi fellas,
al little help please. I've read thread after thread but can find the info i'm looking for.

I'm trying to install a mini starter on my 350 w/ 168 tooth flexplate.

My old starter (which sounds pretty good with 2 shims on the outside) is an R713218A full size staggered mount starter with 9 teeth on the gear.

i'm trying to install a 555-10002 prostarter from jegs. it's got 11 teeth. No matter how I shim it is screeches or oven clacks and looks as if its tearing up the flexplate teeth.

Set me straight here please. Do i need to find a mini (i'm looking to go mini because of possible header clearance) starter with 9 teeth that'll work with a 168 flexplate?

thanks
steve
