Who’d of thunk!

Looking at my 68 Golden and noticed a lot of scrapes down to the original paint. Never really thought about it but the paint kept peeling around the scrape. So I helped it along very lightly with a single edge razor. Looks like earl as in Shieb painted it . Looks like they sealed it and painted without sanding it . Little 2k sanding and a hand rub , the paint shines up nice. No telling if any body work was done but I doubt it as there are painted over dents. So I guess in my spare time I’ll be pealing off the paint each panel one at a time

Re: Who’d of thunk!

An old family friend long gone now had a 58 Chevy Pickup he bought brand new and used it on his Almond Ranch.

This truck with original paint looked like you took a ball peen hammer to it and slung concrete splatter all over it. He took it to Earl Shieb's and had it painted...I don't think they even washed it before they painted it.
He was proud of it.

Scheib. My dad knew a guy who took his truck in for paint, and the only thing that they masked off was the window glass.

Re: Who’d of thunk!

I thought I'd up the ante on my first car, drove right past Earl Scheib's and went to Maaco...
My bad. I'd take ol Earl's paint job any day after my Maaco experience.

My 68 had a 5 gallon brush paint job
Spent way to much time cleaning that off as a young fella

The junkyard hood on my truck was painted black with a brush. Something I never noticed until yesterday there is a ring on the hood where you see they set the can. Underneath the black it's medium olive which is the color of my truck.

We have all seen vehicles that probably would have been better off with a cut and buff than the paint job they got.

Re: Who’d of thunk!

My dad insisted that I brush-paint a '52 international pickup we had back in the '70's that still had pretty nice original paint. It looked pretty good from a distance but crappy up close. It did nothing to help the value of the truck and probably lowered it a lot.

Ain't that the truth!

I don't think that is one of the five colors Earl offered. Must have been some other scuffless sprainter

Re: Who’d of thunk!

Started the rest of the bed panel coming out better than expected . And people pay big money to replicate patina . The bare metal I may hit with red oxide primer and buff it to blend it in a little

Re: Who’d of thunk!

That is coming out great. The fade makes the top paint look like Saddle. I know the gold poly fades to look brownish, but I wonder if the shop used the Saddle code.

I know painters will tint primer with body color. I wonder how that might look for spot paint you're not trying to blend? Close in match while not looking like you were trying. Just make less obvious

Re: Who’d of thunk!

I think they did use saddle on it when it was repainted. I'm going to try fluid film on the bare steel .

Re: Who’d of thunk!

Was a little nervous about taking the letters off . Hit them with some pb blaster and the speed nuts came right off . No broken studs

That old girl is gonna shine right up. I am really liking the brown left on the finish. Keep working on it as I think you are making great progress.

Re: Who’d of thunk!

I like the contrast of the brown on the gold . I am going to add some back on the left bedside I think I went a little to far sanding

Cool! That's going to look pretty damn good. Perhaps the crappy paint has saved the original paint.

I'm sure the paint term used loosely helped protect the original . The "paint" came off in spots like a vinyl wrap

It looks like vinyl on fabric backing like, dare I say, naugahyde?

It's like a wrap. Very thin and a lot was brittle so it came off in flakes.
