Hated to add something shiny

I may have to paint it brown. Naw but am closer to my first drive.

71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

I'm ready for my first drive but......I can't find any used 15" tires!!!! My local tire guy had none. Not one 15"!! Who knew that this would stop me. I will widen my search today and hope for success.

Score! After stops at four tire shops and turning up empty it was suggested that I check the local metal recycler as they had used tires. What? Why? They recycle cars for the steel and sell good used tires on the side. I got four mounted and balanced for $140. Yeah! Les Schwab wanted $189 for one new one. The tire shops state that by the time people buy new tires to replace their 15" tires they are well worn and can't be resold.

Sitting on it's own tires and wheels for the first time! I like the stance, the wheels look perfect, it is full of fluid and ready for the first test drive but.......................When I tried to shift out of park today, there was no connection to the shift rod. I knew it could happen when I took the el cheaper path to obtaining a short steering column. These steering columns, made by Saginaw and shared by GM and Chrysler, can be shortened easily by just applying enough force to collapse the column to the desired length. The problem is internal, the shift connection between the shift lever and the tab that connects to the trans is two tubes that are locked together by nylon tabs that break when shortened. Tomorrow I'll pull the column, try to locate the hidden connection point, cut a slot and mig weld the two tubes together. Anyway, here it is
