Need Help ASAP on Camaro Tach. Need to get truck back on the road!
Ok guys, just yanked my instrument cluster out of my truck because I'm sick of the tachometer reading being off. I've got it in complete pieces right now and I'm looking at the small circuit board that connects to the camaro tach. First I'll let you know the date on the tach is September 17, 1976. Secondly the highest rpm this guage can possibly display is 7000 RPMS. Back to what the tach is doing. When I'm idling and the tach is hooked up, it's reading twice as much as my actual RPM's. Like this tach is setup for a 4 cyl. Did they ever make a 4 cyl even in a camaro? Anyways, here's the attached image of how it's wired up now. Can anyone tell me how a camaro tach is supposed to be jumped so i can use it for a 8 cyl? Thanks!

I dont know about the wireing, but they had only small blocks, buick v6s and chevy inline 6s in those camaros. Every one I have seen with a tach had a v8 though. I think they were only in the more expensive ones.

Larry,
I got this instrument cluster from a board member and they installed the tach. This cluster has been a nightmare since the day I wired this member the money for the cluster. I'm wondering if I'm better off just buying a new instrument cluster from Ricks in AZ and not having to screw around with this BS anymore. I have the tach head installed into the bezel, there are 2 wires coming from the back of the tach head into this circuit board thingy about the size of a 50 cent piece. It's wired as seen above. Now, this 50 cent looking thingy is somehow supposed to attach to 3 studs in the instrument panel and I don't have the slightest idea how. Can someone tell me how this is supposed to be setup? I'm starting to yank hair! Joe |

Do a search for "Camaro" on here. I did a little poking around awhile back and there was a good bit of Camaro tach info buried here and there on this board.

I did and there was hardly squat. I think a lot of it was lost when we changed to the new "format" for our board. I have another question for you guys. I know the factory truck tach's only go up to 5K, but if you wind 'em out where do they actually bottom out at? For EG, If I lay the coals to my truck I can make the speedo go past 100 (even though that's the last number) and it stops almost before it makes it back to zero. Will the tach do the same thing, where does it actually stop even though the last displayed # is 5K? I might just throw this thing in the trash and order a whole new instrument cluster with tach from Ricks pickup parts. They seem to have the best prices on them.
