You could determine the fate of this camper shell

First of all, I don’t really know what it is (year, make, or model). It’s old, and the interior wood is peeling pretty good. Do people restore these old camper shells? Is it doomed for the dumpster?

Re: You could determine the fate of this camper shell

The outer shell looks good. The panel interior, not so good. If a man could replace a section at a time, (and brace it), I would think it would be worth a go. I plan to cut down an 8 footer to short bed length some day. It would be much the same. As far as interior wood, ditch the paneling for some quality plywood. I like the rear entrance. Unique.

Re: You could determine the fate of this camper shell

New paneling wouldn't be a hard thing to do. I restore about anything under the sun. I can only speak for myself. The one I bought is a later 70s one. All aluminum, frame and all. Just a bare shell, no paneling. I could panel it but I want an easy on and off one and this thing is very light. It's tan with crank-up windows in the center of the side with plexiglass bubble windows (think van-era) that are fixed. Those had been amber but are darker and not so clear anymore. They originally had scroll work around the edges. I bought orange glass tint from a stained glass hobby supply house for the clear glass crank-outs and rear hatch. So far that's it. I plan on woodgraining the tan paint and adding some clearance lights. I may add some foam to just the ceiling because when it rains it's super loud. I say if you like it restore it

I hate to get rid of anything that's classic... but I'd have to have a really strong emotional attachment to hold onto that one.

Re: You could determine the fate of this camper shell

Of course it’s fixable!
That will be very easy to “Remodel”
Unscrew the peeling paneling from the roof, and replace it with new backer board, and cover it with foam backed interior cloth.
My Grandparents used to take a Two Week Walleye Fishing trip up to Canada every year, in a “Camper” just like the one you show.

Good thing I’m not your neighbor, that thing would have some vinyl lettering on it, “68 Bowtie’s, Shagg’n Wagon”

Re: You could determine the fate of this camper shell

Lots of food for thought! I initially planned for it to go, but I also don’t like the idea of junking it. I may peel off the wood for now and of course add the shaggin wagon letters.

I believe you'd have to cover that paneling with shag carpet, then

Personally I really like the canopy tops. They’re all the trend right now and I’m sure someone would love to have it and restore it, if you don’t plan to make use of it. I have no idea what they’re worth, I’ve seen people try to give them away and end up junking them and I’ve seen others go for $500.

My vote is to restore it.

Re: You could determine the fate of this camper shell

Well, I didn't sell it, but I'm not restoring it either. I gave it to a young man that also has a 70 c10. Him and his friends picked it up today. Much more likely they will fix it up than if I keep it... lol
