3 speed transmission problems

I have a 1966 c10 with a 250 inline 6 and a 3 speed on the column. I am having a problem shifting in reverse and first, but I am not having a problem shifting in second and third. Does anyone have an idea on what might be the problem. Thanks.

First thing to do is to check that shift rod to make sure the bushing is still in place and not too worn, keeping the linkage from moving as much as it needs to.

Thanks for your help. I played around with it yesturday and it started shifting fine, but this morning I go out to drive it, put it in reverse and the control arm falls out of the linkage to the steering wheel. I am not sure how to keep it in there because if I tighten it a lot it is hard to move, but If I dont tighten it, it does not want to stay in.
