Another Glass Question!!

Just wondering ... removed all the tinted glass from parts truck to put in my 67. Are most of you members installing glass yourselves or taking to an auto glass outfit? Doesn't look very difficult but I don't want to screw up my new rubber or the glass. Any special tools? Thanks folks!

Yes there are special tools that make the job alot easier! I worked in a glass shop for a long time and specialized in auto glass. There is a tool called the "hook tool" and its like a screwdriver with a pointy tip and curvy end, it helps to get around both the metal frame and rubber. I would suggest taking it to a specialist because if it is already out of another truck it will be very prone to breaking. But then again most glass shops will not install other glass it has to be their own, and if they do they won't care as much if it breaks then your just at a loss, your call.

thisolechevy - do you have a picture of that tool? I just got my body back from the shop and need to install my glass. I was going to try the "rope" trick to get it in, but thought that some sort of "hook" would be useful getting the rubber onto the metal frame. The glass is tomorrow's project so any pointers you can give would be awesome. (I wish the search feature was enabled..)

Glass guys around here have no clue how to install these windows-had to go to a buddy's house & install a windshield for him. All they know is glue & go. Glass shop guy broke a glass, tore his rubber then gave up & left. I had a new one installed in minutes using a cord/rope. GMC Paul has outlined the installation somewhere. Put the top in first. I just did the rope method on my window went in pretty easy I started mine in the bottom of the windshield. All we used was the rope a little soap all around the gasket and 2 of those white plastic windshield thingy from the glass shop to help get the rubber over the groove.

Well, I used most of the day tackling my brake lines. I almost have them done. I've got to bend one more piece before I hit the glass. I fully expect this to be tomorrow (even though I said that yesterday).

I do have the rubber and chrome layed out to put in the driveway in the morning to let it get warm and flexible.

Well, the chrome I bought from Year One wasn't bent correctly. It wouldn't fit in the glass so I used my old chrome and it fit right in there like a glove. The back glass was a pain the a$$. The front wasn't that bad except for the last little bit. Just as we were finishing it off the chrome slipped out from the grove. I've attached a pic to see if anyone has any idea how to fix this. If not, I'll just wait for a rock to take a chip out of the windshield and let a prof. do the job!!
