New Carb questions

I'm looking for a new or rebuilt carb for my 69 w/a 350. This thing has a manual choke on it at the moment.

What would you guys recomend as far as a replacement? I want a 4 barrel, do I need to replace the intake manifold. It has an Edlebrock unit on there at the moment, but that's all I know. How hard will it be to remove the manual choke and put the normal choke back on there. What is the normal choke? Can ya tell I'm green?

I personally like Qjets. some other board members may be getting ready to ban me for my preferrences. if you have the time & skill there is not much that works better.
reality states that you go with a Edelbrock. is your manifold for a spreadbore or square bore?
BTW, look at my truck sometime, I like green!

The "normal choke" is a manual, cable operated choke on these trucks as well as on most older vehicles. Electric chokes are nice, but more expensive. I have a real nice Q-Jet, recently rebuilt if you are interested.

I have an Edelbroc 1405 (manual choke). It's a 600 cfm and all I did was take it out of the box, bolt it up and go. It was set at the factory and all I have messed with is the idle mixture just to make sure it was right on. I'm not running a choke right now and haven't for the last two years. I might add an electric choke ($40) this fall, haven't decided yet. The best thing about the Edelbrock carb is there are no gaskets below the fuel level(no bowl gaskets) to leak, and you don't have to remove the bowls
to change the metering. It uses metering rods instead of jets to calibrate. Hope this helps. Good luck and keep on truckin'.................Jerry

I've run a 1406 and 1411 Edelbrock both have been great carb's and trouble free .

So, I guess my next question is should I make it so an electirc choke would work if I get a new carb or should I leave it as a manual? If I were to go with electric, how would I do that and make it work?

Piece of cake. A single ignition-switched wire to the carb is all it takes in most cases. (fro an electric carb)

Edelbrock makes the electric choke and sells it as a kit(about $40), just bolt it on, hook it up, and adjust per instructions. Good luck and keep on truckin'........Jerry

So it's not a hard thing to do I understand.......but would you recomend it for the this year of truck or would you rather keep the manual choke....what are the advantages and disadvantages of each??

Manual chokes are cheaper, just have to remember to disengage them when engine warms up, or gas mileage will suffer and possibly foul a plug from too rich mixture. Electric chokes you pay for the convienience of having it done automatically. The older I get, the less I trust my memory. Good luck and keep on truckin'.......Jerry
