Aluminum fan shroud fitting
I have a new cold case radiator and I’m looking to install a dual fan set up with it. The cold case shroud and fan is 375 dollars that’s more than I paid for the radiator itself. I found some no name and cheaper shrouds that are made for our trucks. Will any shroud fit the cold case radiator? Or do I need to buy the cold case? I also thought of getting a windstar fan and modifying it to fit. I’m not to sure of what direction to go

Like most radiator manufacturers, Cold Case radiators come in various configurations, you didn't say which one you have. Also, how you control the fans has a lot to do with the installation.

Careful...I purchased an aluminum shroud and 2 14" fans from a reputable Online source...it was part of their radiator "package" deal and wasn't inexpensive. However, I found some time later that the fans just weren't enough to keep things cool while using A/C on hot summer days. I had to replace the generic crap fans with quality spal fans. Research the fans so you know their CFM and amp draw. Also keep in mind that the CFM rating of an electric fan is measured at zero static pressure. Once the fan is installed, it will not reach its full CFM rating due to the pressures involved pulling or pushing air through the radiator and the shroud will affect this too. If I had done this before purchase, I would have acquired a shroud and purchased quality fans for it and probably saved myself several hundred bucks. These are the spal fans I bought: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/SPU-IX-30102042 They are rated at 1864 CFM each and pull 19.5 Amps. These guys did the trick for me. The fans I was sold were rated at 1200 CFM (LOL, no way) and pulled around 10 Amps each. The Internet says in general, to cool a small block you need 2000-3000 CFM and the big block would require 4500 CFM. Hth, -Kevin

I thought about buying a generic shroud online. There is a local guy on Facebook selling spal fans. I thought I’d toss those on there. 400 hundred dollars for the cold case fans and shroud is too much right now.

I just put a cold case in my truck . I bought the electric fans, shroud and radiator as a package deal about 7 or 8 years ago at the Syracuse nationals. I put the stock shroud and clutch fan on and it seems to cool it sufficiently. Drove yesterday in 88 degree heat stop and go and the temp never went over 195 on the gage . That’s head temp water was most likely 10-15 degrees cooler . As of now I’m not going to bother with the electric fan/ shroud . I can see the fans aren’t top quality like the Splal’s on my Chevelle from Dewitt’s .

I like and use Spal fans on my LS swaps.
On my 68 C10 I used a Afco radiator and a single 16" Spal fan. Biggest radiator I could fit. It's a generic LS dual pass. You also get them as a SBC dual pass. No shroud. I've had it in 95 degree heat in heavy traffic and no over heating. ECM controls the on at 205 and off at 195. Pic. |

Originally I was going to use the factory fan shroud and fan clutch set up. The previous owner converted the transmission from manual to automatic and nothing lines up. The engine sits too low and the fan blades hit the plastic shroud. I gave up trying to make things work stock wise. Will a cheap 80 dollar eBay fan shroud with a couple of spal fans work?

The shroud needs to create 3/4 inch or more of space between fans and rad and should seal reasonably well against all 4 edges. You could start by installing fans directly to the rad, find out if that is good enough. If not add a shroud. I have no idea if any of this would work for you but those fans I posted work with shroud, an original 4 row rad and a BBC for me. HTH -Kevin
