Broken tap removal
Anybody got a trick to removing a broken 3/8 tap from a hole? Buddy was cleaning up threads in engine block and somehow snapped the tap off.

Re: Broken tap removal
I'll have to bookmark that, it looks fantastic. It would be most difficult to drill a tap for an easy out. But those look like just the right thing. Let us know how it works out.

Re: Broken tap removal
If that set works, you will be money ahead.
Here is the set like that I am used to. Link: https://www.amazon.com/Walton-Tools-.../dp/B0006NGGCM You can also make a chisel out of an old tap with a Cupped shape on the inside. I can send a Picture if you're interested in that idea. Carbide is the best thing for get HSS taps out. But carbide prefers a Ridgid setup or it with chip and break. Dremel tool with carbide Deburring tool works also especially if it cannot be setup in a milling machine.

Re: Broken tap removal
This is so Ironic to me.
Just this Last Friday I had a Critical job, This stuff needs to be Approached with Kitten gloves (Most of the Time). Thursday evening, I got a call from my (Direct boss) manager. We worked together to get this fixed. I put a Keen Sert in a hydraulic Block that has No replacement part # This was for a Major Car manufacturing Facility. It was for a 5/8 x11 and was taped to 7/8 x 14 for the keen sert.

Re: Broken tap removal
I've removed broken off exhaust manifold bolts by welding a nut to them. Maybe this technique would work with a broken tap.

Re: Broken tap removal
I am not sure what he used but he did text me a picture saying he was able to get it out. I will ask him when I see him next what he did.

The old nut welding trick has saved many a person, including myself. Back when I was just trying to get mine running this was the result of trying to change out the thermostat.

Re: Broken tap removal
The weld-a-nut trick works good on bolts...not so much on taps and driĺls..their hardness makes them crystallize if you weld on the hardened parts

Re: Broken tap removal
So I talked with him again and he used some gun oil squirted in then used a punch to tap it out. He said it worked pretty good like the oil was helping float it out

Re: Broken tap removal
On an old truck of mine a grease zerk was snapped off in the king pin area of the axle. So I tapped an eaze out in there and promptly snapped it off. Never did get that out...
