Help with 70 cpp front suspension on a 71

Recently purchased cpp tubular an arms, drop springs, shocks and 2 inch drop spindles for my 71 from a friend who used them only for a mock-up. What I just found out is 67-70 trucks are different from 71/72 trucks, what problems will I run into installing these parts?

I’m considering buying the cpp front linkage kit to make everything fresh, but what kit should I buy 67-70 or 71/72?

I also need upper ball joints for the arms, and have no idea what ball joints to buy.

I plan to call cpp to bother them with these questions, but figured I’d drop in here to see if anyone can help me

Balljoints and steering component need to match the year spindle you are going to use.

Ok. So if I’ll have to order the 67-70 cpp linkage setup, and I should have no issues with fitment ?

ball joints I’ll have to match those 63-80 spindles.

How about my existing hub and rotor, will they work on the new spindles I have ?

Existing rotors will work fine.
Balljoints need to match the year of spindle.
If the spindle is a 63-70 conversion spindle you need 63-70 balljoints.

The outer tie Rod needs to match the year spindle also.
The problem is the 63-70 outer tie rod is 5/8 left hand thread.
The 71-72 outer tie rod is 11/16 right hand thread. The taper in the spindle is also different.
You can with buy all new steering for a 63-70 truck or use aftermarket tie rod adapters that are threaded 5/8” on one end and 11/16 on the other.
The 63-70 trucks use a different center link than the 71-72 trucks.

Look at the link in my signature.
Lots of info there.

Re: Help with 70 cpp front suspension on a 71

FOR YOUR SPECIFIC PROBKEM,… ie 71-72 truck trying to run 63-70 spindles,…
You need either:
1) 63-70 centerlink and 63-70 inner and outer tie rod to go with your 63-70 spindles.

OR

2) use your existing 71-72 center link and run your 71-72 OUTER tie rods at the inner location and connect them to a 63-70 outer tie rod (with the above mention conversion tie rod sleeve) to connect to your 63-70 spindle.

OR BETTER YET

3) Buy 71-72 drop spindles.
This will allow you to use all your original steering by swapping the balljoints in the CPP control arms to 71-72 balljoints.

Re: Help with 70 cpp front suspension on a 71

Wow keith thanks for that knowledge. The way I look at it is I’ll buy a complete 67-70 steering kit, as cpp sells the kit (part #6770DSLK-CP-C10) for $329, and 71/72 spindles are the same price, but I’ll still be stuck with my old steering linkage. So this way I’ll be all new linkage and everything.
