How Do you remove the Shifter on a SM465
I pulled my motor and rebuilt the top end and am having one hell of a time lining the motor and tranny up so I decided to drop the tranny, bolt it to the motor and drop it in as one. Now the problem, the shifter handle is like 8 feet long and has to be removed. I can't figure it out, wether it is screwed in real tight or is the a secret I am not aware of. My haynes manual isn't helping much. What do I do?

Take a look on the side -- You'll notice a roll pin that needs to be punched out, then the thing should slide out. If you can, take the hump out of your cab, it'll be in the way big time otherwise.

on top of the tranny where the shifter goes in, it looks like there is a round metal piece with a slot in the middle for the lever. push down on this little round area and twist, kinda like the childproof safety cap on some pill bottles, and it should pop up. no need to hammer anything out. sorry I cant explain it better

Ditto on what Adam said. Grab the shiny collar push down and twist. Some where a PITA, but that is how it comes off.

What i have found to help out is soak it down with wd-40 or penetrating blaster i prefer the latter.. Then get some channel locks and grip the collar right above the ridge push down with the channel locks if it wont push tap with a hammer TAP> and then twist the channel locks to unlock the ring.
Im not too good for explaining but the channel locks will work if its stuck on there. |
