failed inspection
Went to the same place as last year. Now they want me to put 2 cats on since I'm running true duals and put on re-circulated air system. I'm running a 5" K&N open element. I'm wondering if I can just vent the driver side rocker cover through the bottom of the air cleaner (similar to stock) would fix that.

as long as a vehicle is stock or has stock certified parts, for your particular year if it has same or better parts then thats all you should need pass or not. if it had cats originally then you are by law supposed to have them unfotunately. if it fails with that then find ways to try to qualify yourself for "grandfathering" your vehicle since it is over 10-15 years old and has same/better/equivalent stock parts. if your truck is burinign oil due to age, theres nothing the state can do because of the vehicles age and miles. all states with emission laws also have "grandfathering" laws so do some checking and you should be able to get by with just cats. usually the city library should be able to help you out with city/county/state laws reguarding this incase they try to make you do $5000 worth of unnecessary add-ons.
I know that i would have no problem with grandfathering with my truck (a 76GMC) because it did not come with cats stock and still has stock engine including 50 state legal stock replacement carburetor. hopefully this helps.

i feel your pain, sorta. my neighbor and friend of the family 3 houses down has an 84 Sierra Classic with a rebuilt 350 out of a nova. True dual exhaust with no cats, no emissions at all. he got red stickered when he went to get inspected (kinda odd here since most places hand inspections out without looking at the vehicle). I'm not sure how he worked it out, either he went somewhere that didn't care, or he said he would throw a skeleton cat on to look legit.
I'm thinking of similar, cutting off my clogged cat, putting a pipe on, then slide and weld the cat over the pipe. My dad knew someone that replaced his cat with a "test pipe" and it was like a whole diferent truck.

84 Silverado with a rebuilt ZZ4. Dual exhaust with flowmaster 2 chambers. Heddman hedders. Open element 5" K&N air cleaner.
Is there a cut off year when a vehical is exempt from smog control? I'd like to get an air system like swervins. Nice. I've got the bottom plate already just a matter of getting the rest. |

85Silveradoin04- What area do you live? Some of us have had to go through emissions and are familiar with stuff that can help us legally pass and give you hints. I've passed with my ZZ4 with dual exhaust but I didn't have to have cats since Texas says 84? and older don't need them.

Where do you live?
I want to know if a truck has a lot of blowby and is burning oil, is there anyway to really pass without rebuilding?

I'm in Round Rock Texas.
I passed last year and the 10 years prior with dual exhaust, no cats. Don't know. Honestly, thier probably getting ready for the sniffer next year by requiring stuff now. I'll probably bite the bullet and get 2 hi-flow cats. If not, I'll have to through this same crap from here on out with future inspections. |

8t5... try removing the PCV from the valve cover & just leave it hang sucking fresh air, put a regular breather in the valve cover hole.
As far as dual cats go...here in MO...if the vehicle came from factory with a single cat...thats all there suppose to allow by law is a single cat. They would allow oversize & free flowing. Now generally they dont catch that it has true duals & dual cats, cause they look under one side with a mirror & as long as they see A cat...there happy & dont look for a second one. my 86 GMC Caballero was technically smog illegal, but it passed smog So it depends on local laws, here in MO...nothing was grandfathered, if it was 1971 or newr it had to go though smog, they just recently changed it to a rolling 26 year deal, new law as of last month

put a good pair of cats on it, Catco makes some that arent insanely restrictive, i believe Random Technologies makes cats that flow damn near as much as an equivalent sized pipe. |

These are the Rolls Royce of converters. They are the bullet cats I have on my 85. If you want the best, Random Technology cats are the ones you want but they are not cheap at $149.00 each. There are plenty of cheap cats out there, but cheap is the key word.

funny, the function of the PCV valve is to help ring seal by removing positive pressure in the crankcase, not hurt ring seal. BTW, if you jsut let it suck air, you'd fail a visual inspection because its not properly hooked up. would also cause an extreme lean situation. not a good idea when you're dealing with smog nazis.

if it passes the sniff test, they dont even open the hood, even if they did, if you lay the pcv in a manor that it appears to be in correctly, they dont even notice. If they do notice, theyll ,say, hey, this thingie widget isnt hooked up ( there $7.50 an hour clueless flunkies). Here in Missouri anyway.
When I was first told of this ,I didnt buy into it either, but it does work, if the engine is worn, the pcv is sucking the dirty crankcase air back into the cumbostion & the sniffer catches it.
