There's nuts underneath. You have to take the glove box and instrument cluster out to get to them easily.

Like TX said there are 5 or 6 nuts that you must take off from the backside of the dash (I think the stock ones are speed nuts) Getting at them is sort of a PITA. I don't understand what you mean by "screws" though, Doug

Like the above guys wrote, there are screws in the front that are visible.
Inside the dash are about 5 or 6 nuts. You must take off the dash cluster and the cardboard in the glove box to get at them. I also went through the radio hole to get to mine.

Or you could get really angry and rip the thing off with a sawzall and an angle grinder, and grind the bolts off the old dash pad, assuming you don't want to use it again. When I take mine off (and mine has to be replaced) that is what I am going to do. I think being held on by the visible screws will be plenty. Thoughts?

I don't know about that. I think the pad might not be secured good enough. If anything, I would probably say that it would be better to use the nuts to secure it than the screws. The nuts are at least in the center of the pad.

The screws alone seem to do fine. I hae mine like that at one point...and at another point I had only the nuts..
Whenit is just the nuts, the pad will sag, and while I did like the lower horizon of the dash, it looked like it would end up damagine the pad.
But I did go about 2 years with no nuts holding the pad on and there was absolutly no damage done.

yep - those damn studs/nuts under the dash are overkill. Good thing someone thought of clips over the past 30+ years

so there are 7 nuts on the bottom side of the dash... take out the glove box and inst. cluster and use a 3/8 nutdriver... easy as that. you'll have to use a wrench on the the one above the radio (if the radio is still in it) and take out the head light switch to get to that one, but it's not hard and if you're getting ready to paint you should do that stuff anyhow. it'll take you about half of an hour and you'll save your pad..... good luck

So this post turned into a twenty post twig and berries joke. I love it, but I did learn that someone named Andy had some greasy shirts and magic markers and that my suspicions were right, it's fine to go without nuts........bada bing!
