disassemble tilt steering column
I need to know if there is an easy way to disassemble a tilt steering column. The column i bought did not have them , so all I need to do is put on the dash seal, firewall seal and retainer and they won't go on over the shaft and auto shift linkage. Thanks for your help...Tom.

I also need to know if there are supposed to any shifter detents mounted to the column tube. My standard auto shift column has a tab with several steps in it to prevent shifting back up into reverse...Thanks again.

You do not need to take the column apart just bend the linkage enough to slide them on.

The detents are inside the top end of the tilt column. John

Well then, how do you remove the retainer ring and bolt from the upper part of the steering shaft? I don't see how the retainer ring comes off and it is not explained clearly in the shop manual. Thanks.

I am not sure what you mean about the retainer ring and bolt. What are you trying to take apart?
If the detent does not hold, there is a good chance the shift lever spring is broken and/or the end of the shift lever is worn. Jim |
